Does anyone actually need the DMG?

I made my first adventure today, and found the DMG to be essential. I don't see how you could create and stock a dungeon with encounters in 4E if you lack it. At least not if you want an adventure that balances out and is constructed to work properly within the system.

The Final Preview - Alignment (Is this really the first thread?)

Incorrect. Your way of thinking is a holdover from the previous edition. Law is good, chaos is evil. There is no implication of other alignments in 4E.

D&D 4E Why I hate the Hydra: —and other dumbed down 4E monsters—

Don't think of them as dumbed-down. Just accept that they were too complicated from the start, and 4e has finally fixed them. ;)

D&D 4E The (lack of a) Bag of Rats Problem in 4e

Good grief. Are there players actually dense enough to, in all seriousness and hopes of the DM allowing it, attempt the bag of rats thing? And are there DMs who are at all puzzled by what they should do about it? If this is a problem that needs addressing, I weep for modern DMs. They don't...

    D&D 4E Are easy checks....easy? (4e spoliers)

25% failure rate at low levels sounds fine to me. These things are only relatively easy: if something is truly easy, the DM shouldn't even be making PCs roll, he should just let them do it. The very act of making a check ought to indicate there's some challenging aspect, and that the outcome...

    4E Art Direction--Yay or Nay

It's a toss-up for me. A lot of the art is average or sometimes below average, amateurish-looking stuff. But there are a small number of pieces that are really excellent. I'm not sure if it balances out, but even if it does, that leaves us at "average." Overall I find the art "ok", but not...

Gnome lovers get some love.. well kind of.

Wow, that brings back memories. I remember back when that gnome was funny, before he was run into the ground constantly. ;) Something tells me the gnome will go down in history alongside Meepo as the earliest, silliest, and only truly iconic thing to emerge from his respective edition...

Okay people, a little wake up call.

4E has aquatic combat rules. 3E didn't have those. It was too dumbed down! ;)

    Artifacts

If you have a problem with the new 4E artifacts, there's information on page 189 of the DMG that should help you out.

Has Point Buy become standard? What Points?

I never knew D&D was about emulating fantasy, I thought it was a tactical battle/exploration game with a fantasy feel tacked on for flavor. You can sure learn a lot on the Internet. ;)

    Burning hands decays even more?

Newsflash: New edition always means something is gained and something is lost. If it's any consolation, this edition devotes a page to how to houserule the game. Go ahead and import the 120 degrees, fingers placed just so fluff from earlier editions if you like.

The guy who leaked the Core Books was a:

Definitely a little of both, unless it was somehow intentional (which I kinda' doubt.) The poll is clearly too simple!

So why can ANYONE use rituals?

It's not disappointing, it's awesome. And it's about time. It only makes sense that anyone could follow written instructions, once they understand how to make sense of them. Plus, now we can ditch spellcasting classes and use rituals only, which at least in my mind simulates the magic of...

My first time DM'ing - Would KotS be good for a newb DM?

There's a short intro adventure in the back of the DMG as well. You might consider running that before moving on to something like KotS.

    What's broken/overpowered? What's weak?

It's the usual situation... nothing is actually broken, but some things work better with certain playstyles. If you don't consider or like these playstyles, some options won't appear very attractive at all.

D&D 4E (Poll for those buying 4ed only!) How old are you?

I'm 33. I started with AD&D, moved to 2nd edition, moved to 3rd edition, never bought 3.5 products, and gave up on 3E. Have played a smattering of pre-3E versions in the meantime, and am loving 4E so far.

    Are Eladrin the New Gnomes?

The elves are neat, the gnomes always were lame. Certain popular fantasy fiction has different types of elves (so does D&D, even though they never represented it so well before.)

    The Books: Last Minute changes?

I'd love to hear a WotC explanation why that race stuff was changed. It sounded like such a good idea.

    Eliminating the divine power source?

I like the idea and think it would work out fine. I'm going to try the game as-is first, but once I'm used to it you can bet I'll try the same thing. I may even go with the "rituals only" option some have discussed.

Cure Disease will KILL YOU TO DEATH!

I absolutely love the way it works now. The threat of death makes it more exciting.
