Ability Checks - Should they be errata'd?

In your example, while Hawking's STR score would be small, his experience would allow him to distract, cheat or befuddle the opponent in some other way so that his low STR didn't matter as much.

4e Has Less Raw Content: Fact!

Not only is it not a fatal flaw, it is not a flaw, period. My only regret on 4E content is that they chose to waste a lot of MM space with some very weird and/or silly monsters that will see little use, rather than include as many old D&D classics as possible.

    Sacred cows: Where's the beef?

Gary Gygax and Greyhawk are D&D, and I don't even use Greyhawk in my games. It hasn't really been D&D in a while.

Your Experiences with DMGs? Forked Thread: 4e Has Less Raw Content: Fact!

The AD&D DMG by Gygax is one of the best RPG books ever written. It's got everything in it. You might say it doesn't address some of the very modern playstyles that have emerged since then, but obviously, there's a reason for that. The 2nd Edition AD&D DMG was almost useless, but I do find...

    Clark Peterson on 4E

I have long wished that Necro would make their own game or version of the game, and support Clark 100% if he wants to do this. I'd buy it and play it instead of official 4E. I really, really hope he goes through with it and doesn't just toss around ideas then leave it be. It would fill a...

Wasn't each campaign setting supposed to get three books?

I expect that most of the stuff they used to put into setting sourcebooks and adventures is going to be used as an incentive for you to buy Dragon and Dungeon magazines instead.

Were the Player's Handbook Power Cards cancelled?

It makes perfect sense from a marketing standpoint. And WotC these days is all about marketing image, not so much offering us solid playability. They were afraid of appearing to be anything other than an evolution of the D&D game, and D&D never required cards before.

Do the Infernal Pact Temp. HP stack?

I've been thinking the same thing. It's weird, like they are still scrambling to catch up, not only with nailing-down rules but with support materials, especially the online stuff. 4E has an overall feel of being not quite ready for public release yet.

    Rate 4e Dragon Magazine

Poor. I wouldn't even call it Dragon as far as content goes. It's technically Dragon because they own the right to call their random assemblage of game files that, but the spirit of many authors, new ideas, etc. is missing. Feels like web enhancements designed to promote the hardcover books...

Were the Player's Handbook Power Cards cancelled?

Agreed, they are vital. I attribute their lack to the simple fact that they (Wizards) are trying to make the radically new game seem "just like D&D has always been" in that you can track everything on a character sheet. Maybe technically true, but when cards are so much easier, they really...

Will the real 4E please stand up?

Exactly. Who said D&D needed or could possibly have a spiritual successor at all?

    Stop being so paranoid

It is not an "artifact of the game"... it is a problem with new-school D&D play, the utterly ridiculous fear of fictional character (PC) death. If you spring a trap and die, so what? Death of a PC can be among the most fun and memorable aspects of gaming. Search for traps when reasonable to...

Why are some powers build specific?

The powers justify the builds, the builds justify the powers. All in all, an added layer of complication and detail that adds little to actual play.

Power-creep Inevitable, But is that Bad?

Power creep is only a problem if you buy new stuff. I don't, and have not noticed power creep. Good way to enjoy the game and save money too. :)

The fate of the Advanced Player's Guide

4.5 in all but name, if you ask me. Advanced Player's Guide sounds like a good investment though.

What do you want to see from 4E Publishers?

Sword & sorcery style stuff, not Tolkien/modern D&D style stuff. Rules for S&S style characters, sorcery, etc.

    Instead of a Screen...

Lay the screen flat and it's a mat! :D Actually, the mat is a good idea, although I prefer keeping my folder and DM info there in front of me on the table. My ideal solution would be to make game rules that can be more-or-less memorized and don't have so many tables and such to reference.

Anyone else notice that if you play a 'monster race' in 4e...

The D&D core rules are the default guidelines for basic play. DMs and players can alter them in any way if it is better for them or would be more fun.

Unhappy w/4E monster manual..3PP pls. publish monster books pronto!!

Reskinning monsters is easy, which is why the book is such a disappointment. More people would get more use from classic/familiar D&D monsters than untested/new ones. And I am speaking here of the flavor and the "traction in the imagination", not the rules. A lot of people find the new...

Unhappy w/4E monster manual..3PP pls. publish monster books pronto!!

This. Very disappointing selection in the MM. But I don't trust the current WotC to understand what fantasy really is all about, and am just waiting on 3rd party books at this point. I don't think WotC is capable of understanding, considering what's been done so far. Lame, lame, lame.
