D&D 3.x - Is It Too Easy To Hit Things?

I agree completely. This is something I've been thinking about recently, with regards to arcane casters and armor. Wizards and sorcerors are denied (or at least strongly discouraged from wearing) any kind of armor; presumably this is to keep them balanced with the other classes once they get...

    What have you played?

My last character was a fighter/swashbuckler/scout. He was the master of the spring attack. I was going to take those cool feats in PHB II that allow you to make multiple attacks as part of a spring attack, but a TPK ended the campaign. The character before that was a fighter who took a level...

    OotS 406

The idea of someone becoming an "instant blackguard" is a bit silly to me. Being a blackguard is not as simple as falling from grace as a fallen paladin; you have to actively pledge yourself to the powers of evil. The "peaceful contact with an evil outsider" is essentially the Fausian deal...

If you could be only one level...which would it be?

Twelfth. I've made good headway into my PrC (if any), have enough levels to do some fun multiclass combinations, and I have a nice selection of feats. Being just "over the hill" means that I'm powerful enough to start having influence on the movers and shakers of society without being so...

    Neutral Paladin

I read a really interesting book based on that idea a couple of years back. In it, the forces of good had finally triumphed over evil, and the world was on the brink of being consumed by positive energy. The protagonists of this book were essentially a bunch of evil PCs who go on a quest to...

    Neutral Paladin

Waaay back in 1E there was an issue of Dragon magazine that had a paladin class for each of the other eight alignments. The LN paladin was all about enforcing law and order, the CN paladin was all about freedom and anarchy, and the N paladin was all about preserving the balance. In its...

Deck of Many Things: Your experiences and advice?

I have been in at least five campaigns featuring the Deck (two of which I ran) and it did nothing but make the game more interesting. Some people got the Void, some people got a couple levels higher than everyone else, but nothing that was game-breaking. Everyone had fun with it, even when our...

City Survivor - Final Vote! (Read the Question before voting!!!!)

I voted Freeport for three reasons. One, it is way more accessible than Sigil. Two, it has a lot of really great adventures and other books supporting it. Three, I love pirates.

Do Monsters Dream of Vampire Sheep?

Unless you really want to make your players' lives hell and have every opponent they ever dropped but didn't finish off come back for vengeance against them later on.... :]

A New Respect for Adventure Writters

Extend that to artists as well. With one exception, all of my contracts were for a percentage of sales. And it was a small percentage at that. When a book/PDF tanked, I didn't see a red cent. And they tanked a LOT. Some of the companies I did large volumes of work for and they disappeared...

Have You Ever Given 0 XP, or Taken XP Away?

I've had characters get 0 XP because their players were absent, but that's par for the course. These days, everyone decides at the beginning of the campaign what will be done with their character should they miss a session. The options are (a) the character tags along with the group, but does...

SCI-FI: SG-1 is out, Flash Gordon is in

According to the linked article, one of the main reasons Sci-Fi decided to do a Flash Gordon show was to have something lighthearted and fun to counterbalance the dark and depressing BSG. So no worries on that account. Whether or not they can pull off 'lighthearted and fun' and not make it too...

    Recommend a new game!

I don't know if it's still being published, but Pinnacle Games' Weird Wars was pretty cool. There was even a d20 version of it. Speaking of Pinnacle, Savage Worlds is a good GURPS-like generic system. The campaign/setting books for it (Evernight, 50 Fathoms, etc.) are well done and creative.

Complete Scoundrel gives alignments for Batman, James Bond, Riddick, and more...

Which is exactly why alignments should reflect character actions and philosophies, not the other way around. Sure, a player may put LG on his character sheet and proceed to act in a manner that he feels is LG, but if I as the DM see it as being anything but LG, that's going to be how the game...

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

I have been told that gnomes were included in the game because of the popularity of the Gnomes book that was released in 1976. I have the book, and it's cute, but other than the name and the physical appearance, D&D's gnomes are nothing like the gnome in that book. Maybe the ability to speak...

Wow, I'm a wimp. My biggest group was 7 players.

HBO to make George R.R. Martin' SoI&F into a series...

I'm just glad to hear that it has an end. I thought it was going to be a trilogy; when Storm of Swords ended with a ton of plot threads unresolved, I despaired of my favorite fantasy saga turning into another Wheel of Time. I need closure and I need it now! :)

    Does your group DM?

Are all the players in your group willing to DM? Yes. Does everyone take a turn, at some time? There are three core players in our group and the rest is fairly fluid. New players come and go. Of the three core players, we do take turns. The last campaign was co-DMed by me and one of the...

    Dagon Mini

I spotted those a while back...can't wait to get my hands on them and then build a campaign specifically so I can sic them on my poor unsuspecting PCs! Plush Cthulhu just doesn't do it for me anymore. :)
