    Building an Airship

There are plenty of third-party suppliments about airships, most of which have rules for building your own, not to mention several examples of different models. Even something like d20 Mecha would be able to help you construct a low-tech, magic-based airship the likes of which are found in...

Microlite20 : the smallest thing in gaming

Hooray for fudging encounter distances! Burn your bras battlemaps! :) After suffering through two campaigns that were very heavy on the dungeon crawl, I have decided that my next campaign will have very few dungeons, and of those dungeons that do exist, I will not be drawing out the map (or...

    roleplaying people are satanists ;)

There's a reason TSR changed the names of demons and devils in 2nd Edition. Took out all mention of the archdevils and demon princes, too. Of course, there were still demons and devils in the game, and they still looked the same, but because they were called baatezu, tan'ari, etc., TSR could...

    roleplaying people are satanists ;)

Considering the level of D&D persecution at the time, I doubt that.

Can anyone explain the logic behind the silent treatment?

This frustrates me too, and not just in gaming. Some people can't handle confrontation, and would rather just disappear off your radar than explain themselves. These people aren't worth the time you're giving them. Give him a call, leave a message, and forget about him. The ball's in his...

Should Spot checks include looking up?

It makes sense not to think of looking up in an inside/underground setting as something that one would do naturally, but that's because in the Real World, we don't have eighty different kinds of nasties that fly, crawl, or just plain live on the ceiling waiting to drop down on unsuspecting...

    Far Realms poll

Fixed it for ya. :) H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard (the creators of Cthulhu and Conan, respectively) knew each other and did many crossovers in their writing. The Dreamlands Cycle, which was written by HPL, has strong fantasy overtones to it as well. Michael Moorcock had strong elements...

    100 campaign sessions!

Congrats, Ambrus! I'm sure your players appreciated the extra effort you put into the end there, with the cake and the drawings. Here's hoping my next campaign can last as long as yours did--and end on such a high note!

Do players need something cool every level?

IMHO, the "need" for cool powers and items only serves to fill the void left by a lack of engaging storyline. The ideal game for me is one where I'm so wrapped up in the story and the characters that I don't even notice getting (or not getting) new Stuff every level.

thoughts on my BITTEN BY VAMPIRE campaign

Emphasis mine. Heh. :p I think this would be a lot of fun to play with. Libris Mortis has an eight level vampire racial class that you might want to check out. It gives the characters the vamp powers a little at a time as they gain in levels, and they also have the option of not taking...

    OotS #359 is up

My favorite experience with Command was in 2nd Edition, and involved a gnome tied up in a tree. We were interrogating him, and every time he didn't tell us what we wanted to know, the cleric used Command to make him...well...perform some bodily function in his pants. It was good times.

Should Psionics be part of the core in 4th edition?

I noted no. Psionics have a different flavor than magic. If you change the flavor, it's no longer psionics, it's mind magic or mentalism. If that's the case, it should follow the same rules as magic--spell slots, schools, counterspelling, etc. At best, psionics should be in Tome of Magic...

    Ideas for Halloween Adventure

For many years now, I have aspired to run a one-shot adventure on or near Halloween night. It seems that this year, I will finally get the opportunity! My weekly gaming group meets Monday nights, and our current DM has agreed to let me run my one-shot on the 30th. Now all I need is an idea...

Amazon: Last War (Eberron) and Complete Champion

Any thoughts on what might be in the Last War sourcebook? A timeline of the war, perhaps? In preparing for my next Eberron campaign, I've been reading a lot of articles on how civilian life changed in the U.S. and the U.K. during World War II. WWII lasted for several years and it had a huge...

No love for the smart fighter?

With such a high Int, you'll want skills to invest all those points into. My suggestion would be Bluff (for feinting) and Tumble (for avoiding AoOs). Improved Feint is a wonderful feat at lower levels, and there are several new feats in the PHB II that rely on Tumbling to be effective. I'm...

How do you pick your setting?

I've run few enough campaigns to not have a "typically" answer. The last game I ran was Eberron, straight out of the book. The one before that was a friend's homebrewed world. Before that was a slightly modified published setting (Mechwarrior's Inner Sphere, using the Mekton II/Mekton Zeta...

Expidition to Castle Ravenloft - Spoilers and Answers

I've always hated the Boris Karloff look for Strahd. It's what turned me off to Ravenloft in the first place. His look was envisioned at a time when artists felt that all vampires had to look like Count Dracula. I am so glad movies, books, and television have helped to get us away from that...

Expidition to Castle Ravenloft - Spoilers and Answers

I've never played or even read the original module, but I am thinking of running this for my group. My only concern is Castle Ravenloft. According to the ToC, an entire chapter of the book is dedicated to it. How "dungeony" is it? I don't want to set up this exciting adventure, only to have...

Is it normal to come back from the dead?

It depends on several things. Do I want to keep playing that character, or do I want to try something new? Would my character want to come back? Sometimes, even if I really like a character, if he died in a suitably dramatic and awesome way, I will just leave him dead. If he went out like a...
