Ebberon - If not guns, then what?

I stand corrected. I admittedly have yet to read through FoW. I've just skimmed through it at this point. What I'm really looking for here is some speculation on what the premier weapon of the Last War might have been. With all that magic flying around (literally, in some cases), it seems...

Ebberon - If not guns, then what?

Fair enough. I have no clue what a musket (or arquebus, etc.) cost to produce in the real world at the time. I was simply going by what was in the DMG. I agree. This thread isn't really about guns in Eberron, though. I have guns in my Eberron, and I'm perfectly happy with them. This...

Ebberon - If not guns, then what?

To be honest, I tend to agree. 1d4+1 just isn't a whole lot of damage, even if it's guaranteed to hit. It's the equivalent of putting a laser sight on a .22 pistol. :) You make a good argument for the crossbow - for mundane ranged weapons in general, really - versus the wand. Sure, the wand...

Ebberon - If not guns, then what?

Now that you mention it, I do remember reading something like that somewhere...possibly in the old "Ask Keith Baker" thread over at the Wizards boards. No mention of that in FoW, though. I'm still not sure that makes them worth the price, but it does make them closer to being worth the price...

Ebberon - If not guns, then what?

You're preaching to the choir, Razz. :) IMC, House Cannith discovered gunpowder while researching a less-volatile equivalent of alchemist's fire. I'm basically approaching this with the mindset that most Eberron fans seem to have. I can accept that no one would have thought to mix certain...

Ebberon - If not guns, then what?

According to the DMG, a musket costs 500gp, and many real-world nations had thousands of soldiers armed with them. Besides, according to Forge of War, a single warforged cost 5,000-6,000gp a piece. Warforged have slightly more hit points than a human of the same class and level, and are no...

Ebberon - If not guns, then what?

I've read many forum threads about firearms and their place (or lack thereof) in the Eberron campaign setting lately. The biggest argument against them is the proliferation of magic in that world. Why have guns when you can have magic? While it isn't necessarily an argument I agree with...

    How mediaeval is D&D, anyway?

It's medieval fantasy, with emphasis on the fantasy.

    Memorable Phrases uttered by PCs

"He probably wrote this before he died." (uttered with a straight face by the rogue upon encountering a note clutched in the hand of a long-dead king.); "Don't! Touch! Anything!" (said by a fighter to the rest of the party just moments before he touched some drow statuette that activated a...

How much technologywould you allow in a non-steampunk setting?

While I chose "None," I disagree that any of those listed items would make a setting "steampunk" (an overused and misused term IMO, but that's another topic entirely). In the real world, firearms were used in Europe as early as the 14th century, which wasn't even the Renaissance yet. In fact...

    Favourite Names for Weapons

My first AD&D character was modelled after the Grey Mouser, and like him, his rapier and dagger had names. Heck if I can remember what they were, though. Closer to modern times....I'm currently playing a paladin who has a number of named weapons. Thorn, rapier (roses are a reoccuring theme...

Epic Moments in Role Playing Games

Most epic moment in gaming for me: It was a Birthright game, 2nd Edition AD&D. There were two players and the DM. My character was Aeric, a paladin/cavalier, the son of a minor landholding noble in the Barony of Roesone. Over the course of the campaign, he rose from being a lowly...

    Oots #472

I used the concept of nameless red shirts to really pull one over on my players once. I was running a Mechwarrior campaign, and the PCs were all members of the same squad. I introduced two NPC pilots who were slated to die by the end of that same session. I gave them names, personalities...

Starting an Eberron game, with a big twist - could definitely use suggestions...

Some ideas: Using an eldritch machine activated by the Mark of Death, the Emerald Claw transforms every corpse in the Mournland into an intelligent, free-willed undead simultaneously. These undead are quickly brought under the leadership of Vol who, disguised as Queen Dannel, launches a...

Star Wars. what era are you playing in? Or who isn't playing in Legacy?

Currently playing in the time period between Episodes III and IV (can't remember off the top of my head if it has a specific name). We have stormtroopers and a repressive Empire, and we have a PC Jedi (possibly two) without messing with canon. It's a win-win situation except for the fact that...

    Giving up on the Quest

The last campaign I ran had no "Quest." The party belonged to an adventurer's guild in town and went on adventure after unrelated adventure with no central purpose or theme other than "visit exotic locales, meet interesting creatures...and kill them and take their stuff." It seemed to work...

Macguffin quest without a macguffin, how would you respond?

    I support this idea wholeheartedly.

How does a farmer end up with a magic item?

Well, the only magic items I can think of being loosed are arrows and bolts, and my players have never been keen on magic ammunition. :p Sorry, couldn't help it. :D I do remember one particularly high-powered game back in college.... Our party had managed to earn the emnity of the demon...

Anyone know what this kind of wizard's skullcap is called?

If you're really going for historical accuracy, a skullcap is more like a beanie or a yarmulke. I would call the hat in the picture a hood or coif. But, as long as you and your players know what you're talking about, call it anything you like. That's the important thing.

Real World references in fantasy settings

There are plenty of published settings that have cultures inspired by the real world, but most of them don't come out and say it no matter how obvious it might be. Personally, I see no problem with this other than the possibility that some of your players/readers might not be all that familiar...
