Creating a govement based on D&D reality

I think it also depends greatly on the mindset of the character. If a character took up adventuring out of wanderlust or a desire to live an exciting life, chances are the idea of settling down and ruling a nation isn't going to appeal to him, even if he were capable of doing so. On the other...

    "Real" Gold Pieces

I have an entire treasure chest filled with plastic gold coins. I use it as a prop in the LARP I'm currently playing in. I got the coins from a party store; they were $7 for a bag of 50, I think. Not the cheapest, but there you go.

Yarr! What be yer' favorite system for runnin' a Pirate game?!

Thank you! I was just about to post that myself! The only thing that bugs me about 7th Sea is that there really isn't a reason for all that sailing. There's no Africa, no Australia, no New World, no Triangle Trade, Cathay isn't accessible by sea, and there are perfectly good land routes for...

    What is Glassteel?

It's a spell that gives glass objects the hardness of steel. I remember seeing it in 2nd Edition...not sure it made the cut to 3.X, though.

    Supernatural Horror in High Fantasy

I've often thought about unleashing a zombie apocalypse on an unsuspecting fantasy world. Dunno how scary it would be, unless the PCs were very low level. Fear of infection would be the source of the horror, otherwise you're just runing a post-apocaylpse game. I would institute some new rules...

If you were to play a version of pre-3.0 D&D, which would it be?

I would play 2nd edition, specifically with the Player's Options books. I loved the freedom and flexibility of the customizable classes. I see a lot of that in True20, actually.

    Pirate Art Help

I usually just do a Google image search for pirates. That seems to work fine for me. If it's for your own personal amusement (i.e. not for profit and you're not claiming any of the artwork as your own), it should be ok to use non-public domain pics. AFAIK, at least.

Loooong Campaigns...How Do You Do It?

It's been a long time since I've played with people who weren't my friends outside of gaming. Actually, most of the people I play with these days are friends who were introduced to gaming after the fact. I've actually had bad luck with taking breaks in campaigns. I can't remember a single...

    OoTS is freaking me out!

I think Bravo may actually have played a double-header of it last night. I caught it as it was just starting, and the screen was split the way they do when the end credits of something are running long. The end credits on the bottom of the screen were from The Princess Bride. Nothing beats...

What would you run if you didn't worry about stats?

Oh, man! I would totally love to play in that game! And I will be using the term "mechaneers" at the next opportunity! :D

Loooong Campaigns...How Do You Do It?

Thanks for all the responses, everyone. You've given me a lot to think about. I think my biggest challenge in running longer games is maintaining personal enthusiasm about the setting/world/genre. Maybe I should try running a world-hopping/time travelling game...? :) I look at my DMing...

Loooong Campaigns...How Do You Do It?

It's not a matter of running out of material or reaching high level too fast (by epic, I meant the scope of the story, not necessarily epic-level play). When my last campaign ended, I still had plenty of stories to tell, and I know my players wanted to continue. I was just burnt out. I...

Loooong Campaigns...How Do You Do It?

Every once in a while, I come across a reference on these boards to campaigns which last years, sometimes decades. After reading a recent thread by Piratecat about the end of his 14 year long campaign (here), I just have to ask: How the heck do you do it?? I just finished running a year-long...

    Favorite non-book game aide.

As the world's most expensive character sheet? I actually had a player who did this. Then I learned he would sometimes be playing World of Warcraft when he got bored. He doesn't play with us anymore.

[DMs] Do you enjoy your prep time from one session to the next?

Yes and no. I love coming up with stories, ideas for encounters, and reacting to the players' actions from the previous session. I'd go so far as to say that I enjoy doing that more than actually running the game itself, which is why I almost never use adventures written by other people...

What has been your geekiest moment?

I glued some dice onto a 3-D collage for my Design class midterm a few weeks ago. It took me longer to decide which dice to use than the rest of the project combined. :) I had a near-geek experience at Fry's Electronics the other night. I was waiting in line behind two guys who could easily...

How big of a deal is treasure to you?

I voted no, it wouldn't bother me at all. My favorite D&D campaign of all time (AD&D 2nd Edition, Birthright) involved a grand total of one magic item (a Holy Avenger), and it only made an appearance in the last battle of the campaign (an epic battle between the armies of Ghoere, Rhoesone, and...

    Against the Giants 3.5?

Hear hear! I sought out the 2nd Edition Against the Giants online in order to use in my campaign, and while I never got a chance to, I love the premise. Giants are an underused opponent in D&D and really deserve more attention.

Victory *and* death: Would you enjoy this?

My all-time favorite fantasy game ended with my character dead and the BBEG alive but wounded. He was forced to retreat with his army back into his own little realm. It was a great, dramatic ending, and I was completely satisfied with it. Of course, the campaign was rather grim and my...

    Lost Monsters

If I had to guess, it would have been the hook horror. EDIT: Must learn to read all posts before posting! Hmm...maybe it was inspired by the hook horror?
