Falling out of love with your game

Sometimes you just played the game so much that you learn enough to know the best way to play the game and there's nothing new or interesting about the game anymore. It doesn't even have to be a RPG, this can apply to any game. Nothing about you or the game has changed, you just became familiar...

How Do You Like Identifying Magic Items to Work?

The effort it takes to identify a magic item should be inversely proportional to the amount (and maybe importance) of magic items a party finds. Going through a lot of trouble (via research, trial-and-error etc.) to identify and use an once-a-campaign artifact is fun and exciting. Doing the same...

    Mongoose exits 4E ?

It may be that those who are most likely to buy 3pp material are also the ones who are most likely to make use of the character builder. There may be a lot of people who don't use the CB (casual gamers and the like), but they're also not the people who go looking for 3pp material.

    3.5e Players, 4e GM

The math would be so off, it wouldn't even be funny. Let's take a lv 14 4e monster. It's attack against a NAD would be around +18. Translated into 3.5, that would be around a 28 or 29 DC. It's NADs would be around 26, so it would be translated to around +15 or +16 to saves. edit: That's not...

    [Draconomicon 2] Dragons worshipping gods?

Didn't DCon 2 addressed this already? Dragons (in general) don't worship gods like humans do, instead they see it as more of an arrangement that benefits them.

[Character Builder] Will it every be customizable?

Couldn't you already houserule certain stuff in by clicking on the little house icon?

Low ability scores -- more fun?

Sure. But I also noticed that the "flawed PCs" that people tends to make are dumb fighters, weak wizards etc. I've never seen weak, sickly fighter or a stupid wizard. The flaws that people chooses for their character (if given a choice) are always ones that has a minimal impact on their...

Low ability scores -- more fun?

Wait, didn't the Heroes of the Lance began as PCs in Hickman and Weis' home game and was only turned into novel and game module form afterward? Anyone know what Raistlin's original stats were?

Low ability scores -- more fun?

Well, the thing is, with a 5 or 6 in 1e/2e, you get -1 hp and about 50% system shock and resurrection survival rate. So that's about a 8 or 9 in modern editions.

Low ability scores -- more fun?

One thing about way back when (1e/2e) is that the translation of stats to game mechanics is way flater. In terms of contributing to your combat effectiveness, a 6 or 7 only differs from having a 14 by a -1 or so. In WotC editions, that difference is by about 4 or 5. Whereas in 1e/2e you could...

Low ability scores -- more fun?

Sure, he was always coughing up blood and stuff, but it's not like he died because of it. A dude who's depicted as constantly sick as Raistlin and living without the aid of modern medicine is a goddamn miracle.

    Humans throughout editions, throughout games

Hmm...interesting. Didn't know 1ed's rolling methods were so...lenient. But then 4d6 drop lowest is just another method listed as one of four alternatives to 3d6. Of course, in 2ed, 3d6 in a row is the standard and 4d6 drop lowest is alternate method V.

    Is the math off?

Just one minor thing. A 16 in Str in 1e/2e gave you a +1 to damage. You need a 17 to get a +1 to hit and damage. Of course, at lv 20, a fighter can hit the best AC in the game (-10) 50% of the time without any magic weapons or str bonuses.

    Humans throughout editions, throughout games

But you'd still be playing a MU from lv 1 to lv 6 while the rest of your party is lv 6. Then you'd be playing a cleric from lv 1 to 7 while the rest of your party is lv 7. Then you'd be playing a thief from lv 1 to 8 while the rest of your party is lv 8. The only exception is that your hp...

    Humans throughout editions, throughout games

Don't you need like a 17 in the prime requisite of your second class(es) to dual class. Beside, you would suck for huge stretches of time waiting for your second class to catch up to your first.

what is the diff between optimized and not??

One good thing I can say about optimizers is that someone who makes an effort to optimize is at least interested in playing in the game. In my group the player who is the least organized, least prepared and misses the most games also has the least optimized character.

what is the diff between optimized and not??

I think that was my point. A very optimized 4e wizard is weaker than an average 3.5 wizard. An unoptimized (but competent) anything is arguably comparable to one of the ToB classes. That should give an idea of how different between optimized and not in 4e. If we use the tier system invented...

what is the diff between optimized and not??

One of the most broken build in 4e is the orbizard. If we totally twink him out, he can essentially cast what amounts to a "Save or Die" (or in 4e terms, "hit and die") once per encounter at lv 30. Compare that with what a 3.5 wizard can do just by picking the right spells.

    The Essentials articles are atrocious.

Alongi’s Fabulous 500! : Daily MTG : Magic: The Gathering Scroll to the bottom, it's got a nice description. I couldn't seem to find the original article.

    The Essentials articles are atrocious.

Oh those, I forgot about them. I think they're terms more often used in a multiplayer environment and I only play limited two player games so I don't really think about classifying cards in that manner.
