How Important is Magic to Dungeons and Dragons? - Third Edition vs Fourth Edition

An encounter power refreshes every 5 mins, which sounds about right for this thread.

And they come every time. Thus proving that you don't need magic to use CAGI.

How Important is Magic to Dungeons and Dragons? - Third Edition vs Fourth Edition

D&D magic is just a matter of "graphics" or imagery. If the wizard shoots lightning and blows the orc back 20 feet that's magic. If the fighter kicks the orc back 20 feet, that's non magic. I subscribe to the idea that magic is just another way or tool for the player/PC to interact with or...

Flavor Mish-mash and favored classes (what 4e got wrong)

You guys do realize that the elves have essentially been split into two races right? "Magic elves" are now the eladrin and "Wilderness elves" are now the elves. 4e "Elves" are no longer the "Elves" of previous editions.

How Important is Magic to Dungeons and Dragons? - Third Edition vs Fourth Edition

Aren't stat boosts much hard to get back in those days? And 3d6 was pretty much the standard rolling method back then.

How Important is Magic to Dungeons and Dragons? - Third Edition vs Fourth Edition

2nd ed AD&D PHB on the intelligence chart. Unless you have 19 int, you have a max # of spells per level. Don't know about earlier editions since I don't have those books. Of course, it was an "optional rule" in 2ed, but at least half of 2ed was optional rules so calling it a houserule is...

How Important is Magic to Dungeons and Dragons? - Third Edition vs Fourth Edition

Another thing is that in pre-3e, wizards have a limited number of spells known per level. Once a wizard has learned a spell, he can't unlearn it and it counts towards his limit. Pre-3e, the wizard doesn't want to learn knock coz he'd much rather be able to learn something else.

Biomechanics of Flight aka Can Dragons Fly?!

So, very simplistically, the more mass an object has, the greater amount of lift is required for the object to fly. Lift is usually generated by wings and is essentially a function of the surface area of the object and its speed. Generally, if an object scales according to geometric...

What Would Happen If (Almost) Nobody Paid for RPGs?

I would imagine it would turn into something like the fan-fiction community. A few rare gems, but tons and tons of bad crap and unfinished work.

    Perhaps a small boycott?

Well, that reminds me. I've pretty much stopped playing magic online since 3.0 came out (and I play exclusively online) because MTGO 3.0 is a resource hog for my 5 yr old machine and leagues still aren't back on. But I'm not boycotting them, they simply aren't offering the service/product I...

    Perhaps a small boycott?

*shrug* WotC dies, some other company will take its place, I'll continue gaming. My enjoyment of RPGs is not tied to the continual survival of WotC. I'm just not getting why so many are up in arms about it in forums and declaring boycotts and jumping ship to other companies. It's like...

    Perhaps a small boycott?

I've been seeing at lot of nerd rage in various forums over that pass few days regarding WotC's decision to end pdf sales and I'm just not getting what's the big deal. So they ended a "product line" that's probably a relatively minor component of their sales, so what? It's like boycotting the...

If it's not real then why call for "realism"?

If it's not real then why call for "realism"?

I think that whether someone finds a particular situation to be unrealistic depends heavily on his or her knowledge base. As someone with a M.Sc. in biology, I find most of the MM to be rediculous. Someone else who has a Ph.D. in literature might not. Yet, I'll still put dragons and griffons and...

Hit or Miss: Odd Wording on Avenger Powers

I agree that it's a timing issue. "When you're attacked..." triggers after the intention to attack is declared but before the attack roll is resolved. "Hit or miss" triggers after the attack roll is resolved.

Is Paizo's Pathfinder really compatible with 3.5?

When we talk about the power of multiclassing, shouldn't we distinguish between casters and non-casters. Wizards 20, druid 20, cleric 20 aren't optimal (in the sense that you can grab a fullcasting PrC and get more stuff), but those classes are still stronger than most non-caster characters you...

So What Makes Star Drive So Cool?

I don't remember much from my alternity days, but I really liked the A/E/O success system.

Is Paizo's Pathfinder really compatible with 3.5?

System mastery is understanding the system so that you can make it do what you want. You need a certain level of system mastery if you want to make a powerful character on purpose, but there's nothing preventing you from making a subpar character after you've understood the system. Also...

Is Paizo's Pathfinder really compatible with 3.5?

3e multiclassing is seen as a problem because of the misconception that 3e is a class based system. It's not. At best, it can be described as a level based system. Every time you go up a level, you pick a set of prepackaged abilities (a particular level of a particular class) and add that to...

PHB2 general feats review (heroic tier)

But in general, stabilizing is only done if there's no other way to heal the character. If you just stabilize a PC, he's not coming back into the fight. The combat medic feat seems very narrow and circumstantial. Maybe change it to "you can use the heal skill on a dying character as a minor...
