    Study: Gaming linked to depression.

yeah I was surprised you didn't mention him or grunge music. Oh, and they also have vampires going all emo because, you know, they... sparkle in the sun light. :.-( What surprises me more is the age. I thought the video game crowd was much younger. I'm pretty sure it is in Europe.

Did Anyone play the new WHFRPG?

I don't think this is necessarily correlated with rule complexity. Several rule-light games don't use tokens, power cards, minis or even dice other than d6. I'm sure a game with tokens and special dice can be horribly complex too. It's a design choice.

Did Anyone play the new WHFRPG?

I don't think this is an improvement or even innovative. I find the minis + custom dice + tokens in different pools + action cards combination awfully fiddly. And board games have had them forever, this isn't exactly a new "interface". I see how minis or even power cards can come in handy, but a...

    Storytelling vs Roleplaying

I agree here. I've always felt the narrativist justification was just that, a justification. I believe the main purpose of these mechanics is balance though, not interesting resource management. I don't think that not being able to ever repeat a manoeuvre during a fight is particularly...

    Storytelling vs Roleplaying

Most of the indie/forge stuff or just any game that allows players to affect the story/gameworld beyond their character's abilities (ie not "making decisions as if you were your avatar")

    Storytelling vs Roleplaying

Doesn't that (bolded by me) exclude the more narrativist games? I tend to agree but I believe Mearls justified the encounter/daily power mechanic as "giving the player more narrative control". Healing surges have also been defended (by 4e supporters, not designers) as emulating some...

Pathfinder 1E [MERGED] Pathfinder forum complaint threads

Oh yes. We definitely need a separate forum for the "which is the best defender" and the "new subscription-only preview is up" threads.

Pathfinder 1E [MERGED] Pathfinder forum complaint threads

Ok, Morrus has no ulterior motive, this is not a conspiracy, not the UN, not a criminal trial. I think everyone gets it now. And now that general discusssion is no longer swamped with pathfinder news i'd love to see that other issue addressed:

Pathfinder 1E [MERGED] Pathfinder forum complaint threads

regardless of intent and NOT attributing the move to corporate conspiracy: The specific forums are ghettos of sorts and the inconsistent split does not "make things easier" for those interested in non-4e news. (I must have missed the swarm of pathfinder topics. OTOH I'm sure there are enough...

WFRP - THIRD Edition Announced from FFG

Of course it's too early to judge but that sounds awfully boardgamey to me. It's sad that they decided to call it wfrp3, even though I understand why from a marketing pov. The old system could really use some balancing and streamlining. Now I'll have to wait at least another 5 years for that. :(...

    $5 4E PHB @ GenCon!

As much as I dislike 4e, I agree this is just a marketing gimmick. How many books are sold during gencon anyway? How many phbs after one year? No matter how well 4e sells, WotC could use a little good publicity (no offense to S.Rouse but things could have been handled better since the 4e...

Absolutely vital core races in D&D

humans gnomes, because we need a short, sneaky race and I prefer them to halflings, any incarnation, but merging them would be fine too. half-orcs, because we need a tall, brutish race. I'm not fond of half races but they look less silly than DB. magicky elves/eladrin, because I like them...

Will WOTC's Ending PDF Sales Because of Pirating Increase Pirating of their Stuff?

I don't think an additional monthly cost for a functionality they had for free is what pirates are looking for. As for searchable quality scans, pretty good copies (bookmarked and OCRed) of every book since phb2 can be found without difficulty. Really good scans do result in larger files but I...

The thing I miss most from AD&D is...

Same here. Of course this kind of advancement did not fit every campaign but each setting could have its own variant. As for gold=xp, I've never liked it. Even when I started gaming (a couple of years before the release of ad&d2) it felt redundant and too gamey. Killing things=xp doesn't always...

    Easy-Go Classes for Beginners?

Not by much. I don't think the wizard is particularly complicated compared to other 4e classes and of course, previous edition wizards. this. and this. Of course newcomers could use some guidance in character creation, but I don't believe the problem is the abundance of options in play. I...

(Sub) Design & Development - Psionics

Probably not, but I'd buy the books. I'm just not into subscriptions or pre-orders. As a rule, I don't buy stuff sight unseen. Anyway the ddi would also have to offer a little more than that, like the long awaited virtual tabletop and more usable crunch (previews or design & development articles...

(Sub) Design & Development - Psionics

Applying this to the old classes would be a nightmare balance-wise, unless they were designed with the new mechanics in mind, which i doubt. A complete rewrite of each class is much more likely. And more profitable too. I would probably bite if the "new" classes eschewed the fire-and-forget powers.

    New PH3 Class....The Psion!

I think non-magical actions shouldn't be magically limited to once per encounter. At least a mana bar can be rationalized as rage or energy. Fire-and-forget powers cannot.
