Ampersand: Debut and Exclusive Content (Assassin Class)

I don't know. Adventurers generally need an excuse to kill things. A fighter can fight for a noble cause and even an infernalock can be "a devil-touched hunter using infernal spells to eliminate evil" (phb1). An assassin commits murders. I guess he could do that to fight evil too but the word...

Ampersand: Debut and Exclusive Content (Assassin Class)

An assassin player class may also be a bit too controversial for a book aimed in part at young gamers. I don't know the ddi terms of agreement but I assume the average subscriber is somewhat older. At any rate, the books' default assumption so far is that PCs are the good guys.

    Sexism related poll

My campaign is the opposite. Men and women have comparable access to positions of power but most cultures have defined gender roles. Female warriors are unusual even though some excel in combat. Likewise, male sorcerers are less common than sorceresses and magic is considered unmanly in some...

    Games you won't play

I looked it up on wikipedia, there was a link to a wraethu LARP site too :-S Add that to my list. I've seen kinkier things but this is both creepy and silly in a furry kind of way. Good find. I don't completely agree on the hierarchy. Imo 30 and older gamers are definitely geekier than a 13 yo...

    Games you won't play

    - anything with furry PCs (yes, that includes dragonborn) - any D&D edition other than 3.x (until 5e comes out, that is) - anything with "abstract", "narrativist" or "fun mechanics" in its design goals. - non-fantasy settings (no matter what historical period) - I'm not a big fan of space-opera...

What alternate game systems are you trying out if you don't like 4e?

    - WFRP, mostly for the setting. The rules could be a bit more streamlined and magic less restrictive. - True20, for opposite reasons. It's the system I prefer in theory but it's a bit too bare-boned. It needs more focus, fleshing out and high quality, well playtested supplements. As is, it...

    Pathfinder 1E A question about Pathfinder's casters.

Just like 4e powers. And the 4e wizard can change his daily and utility spells after an extended rest, so he doesn't "know" them permanently either. No, 4e really doesn't follow a "stamina" model of anything. Every class now uses a vancianish fire-and-forget system with a separate slot for each...

    Magic: Innate or Learned?

A wizard's magic is learned. The sorcerer's is innate but anyone with enough charisma has the potential (no bloodline or Harry Potter bs)

    PHB3 cover!

Nice. The tail is still a bit too large for my taste. But aren't female tieflings supposed to have curled horns? Mimura's tieflings look better than O'Connor's but they too have the fugly brow-horns (even if they're less prominent on the pic you mentioned) What can I say, I'm that picky :D

    What's the draw of half-orcs?

That's an easy one. They're big and strong. Same draw as the barbarian, just one step further. Had another brutish but not too ugly race been introduced in 1e I'm sure it would have been more popular than half-orc.

    PHB3 cover!

Thanks. I didn't realize it was by him. Well it's a bit dark and not as good as I expected. The tiefling has the huge horns, chin spikes and cheesy hairstyle. At least the tail isn't showing. Maybe the design is just unredeemably bad. Could be. Now that i think of it, the layout is a bit off...

    PHB3 cover!

I love the cover. Easily the best 4e cover so far, and I don't even care for giths. I bet Michael Komarck could have made the tiefling and dragonborn look cool. As for the power sources... xps for saving me the trouble of typing this myself.

    MM2 art gallery- AWESOME!

yeah, now I'm waiting for the rest of the manual to get unmasked. That's why I think cute fairies, hot dryads and beautiful angels make more interesting opponents. There are plenty of ugly monsters already. Pretty+mean is a refreshing combination. It also makes the PCs pause before going into...

    MM2 art gallery- AWESOME!

On the whole I'm not sure the art is much better than in mm1 (to me phb2 was a vast improvement over phb1) It's less garish, but there are still a lot of clumsy poses and cartoony pictures (not in a good way). The colossus and demon followers look like something from scooby doo. There are...

    Monsters: Fluff Versus Game Mechanics

So shouldn't option 4 be "More than current but not 2e's overabundance"?

Elegant Rules (Forked From: Inconsistant/Arbitrary rules...)

2e priest spheres and to a lesser degree wizard schools were an elegant system but needed a little tweaking (and balancing, like most thing pre-3e really). I think there was an article in Dragon that got the spheres just right. 3e streamlined a lot of things and brought many elegant rules. I...

Ki versus Psionic: Power Sources Do Battle (in a semantic sort of way)

I like the incorporation of the monk, but I'm not sure that will lead to wider acceptance of psionics. After all, the monk is the other red headed step child of d&d and this move may allienate both psionics and monk fans. Using the same system as other classes might help, though. And I believe...

    Is PHB 2 really "Core?"

Funny. But the collectible thing aside, I wish 4e actually had (viable) rule variants.

Ki versus Psionic: Power Sources Do Battle (in a semantic sort of way)

...and generally has a religious connotation. Rites are integral part of mysticism and can involve external things like prayers to one or several gods and drugs or sacrifices in the case of ancient religions. Mysticism is a specific notion but doesn't translate well in d&d terms. Mystic and...

Ki versus Psionic: Power Sources Do Battle (in a semantic sort of way)

Mystic is too vague. It could include arcane or divine magic. Ki is too specific. There are similarities and I believe Eastern philosophies have heavily influenced the modern notion of psychic powers. But while most traditional monk powers could be explained as psionics, I don't think the...
