    Derogatory Term for Halflings

I like "brat" IMC they are the same race (they've always been overlapping archetypes anyway) but "halfling" is the slightly derogatory name for younger, adventuring gnomes, sometimes used by taller races to include all gnomes, which the elder gnomes find really insulting.

Gabe (Penny Arcades) take on Essentials Red Box

 did we read the same article? I mean, he's not really slamming it but… where did you get the impression that he likes essentials? I don't know about the wotc forums, but the only people I see whining about Essential here are 4e players. I'm sure many 4e haters find the 4.5e debate...

    More Essentials teasers

    nevermind. read something wrong.

    Essentials: which new players?

this, and I think basic attacks, even with stances, are a lot more intuitive than the at will/encounter/daily structure.

    non-4e D&D Players . . .

it could be a case of too little too late for me but it's really a little too early to say. I like the changes so far. they do seem to reverse things I didn't like in 4e (no more martial dailies, the powers i've seen seem to make more sense fluff-wise... I have yet to see how the new marks...

The Difference Between Realism vs. Believability

ok? of course it's a matter of preference. I was just describing what I believe to be common believability issues and simulationist priorities as opposed to the marginal quibbles some posters seem to focus on.

The Difference Between Realism vs. Believability

I don't see a lot of that. I do see people expecting consistent rules, though. for example, some don't like having different builds for minions, regular monsters and PCs when they're supposed to be the same creature, story-wise. again, I don't see many people who are, as far as fantasy goes...

The Difference Between Realism vs. Believability

oh. THEM. I don't think objections to the term Warlord had anything to do with believability. the warlord's mechanics, though, are another story.

The Difference Between Realism vs. Believability

precisely. even discussing D&D is nerdy and "thinking too hard" for some people. so posting just to dismiss the OP's points as nerd concerns isn't helpful. I don't think many gamers care about the former in a fantasy setting and the latter is mostly a matter of preference and aesthetics (for...

The Difference Between Realism vs. Believability

yeah, the "you're thinking too hard about fantasy" line makes lots of sense on a d&d forum, too. it's also a great contribution to the discussion :erm:

Where to put the land of Faeries in my altered Great Wheel?

why not use the outlands / concordant opposition? it fits because it's neutral and connected to the various fairylands in the outer planes (arvandor, alfheim, beastlands...) In 1st edition it was also the home of the celtic pantheon (tuatha de danann) and had a shifting appearance that could...

The Difference Between Realism vs. Believability

this leads to another misconception I see a lot on EW, that because D&D always had gamist elements, more gamisms don't change the nature of the game. or because you didn't mind the old quirks, you should accept the new ones. (this also works for sci-fi elements) but I do wish they had...

Is Mike Mearls responsible for the design of Essentials?

OTOH I think he was behind major changes like martial dailies that are being "corrected" in Essentials.

    Daily Powers are Great

my guess is that martial classes will get daily-less builds and classes like the wizard and cleric who had vancian casting (basically dailies) in older editions won't. I think the essential line is in part an attempt to win the 4e sceptics back and martial dailies breaking immersion was a...

    PC's Name is Funny/Disparaging Slang

of course you should tell him but unless the character was meant to be a hot girl, I wouldn't care too much about the urbandictionary definition. Many fantasy names will mean something unintended to someone, in some language. Also, I believe the correct spelling is "FLIRGE", an acronym first...

    How popular are aberrations?

I don't know. some of them are kind of cool, others are a bit ridiculous, but they don't really work for me as a category. Then again, I don't "get" the whole Far Realm thing. sounds a bit like Slaads to me.

What are you a minority about?

I don't like dwarves. I've seen elf haters, gnome haters and I know i'm not the only one who despises furries or dragonborns but i don't think many enworlders share my contempt for stubby crabby bearded boozers.

Do you use deadlines in your campaign?

this is how we use deadlines most of the time. this is also why the "15 minute adventuring day" was never really an issue for my groups. it's not so much that the players fail the quest if they rest, it's that when they step into a dungeon or start investigating, they set things in motion. I'm...

Mearls is the new manager of D&D

but this isn't a baby shower or a "congrats Mike" page, it's a rpg news thread. discussing what you think of M.Mearl's work and how this promotion could affect d&d in the years to come is very appropriate. it's not like he just lost his job either. there's no need to go easy on him.

Mearls is the new manager of D&D

Folks, be sure to see the warnings later in the thread before responding to this. Thanks. ~ PCat I'm not a fan of what he's done to d&d so I can't say I'm thrilled. at least i don't need to pay attention to new wotc products until the next guy steps in.
