D&D General How to move a game forward?

Different tables, different games, different norms, and the example is under-described. Do the PCs know that there are werewolves in the woods? Can they know? Can they spot the pit trap before they fall into it? Does your game use anything like passive Perception, which is normal in some...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]Exploration Falls Short For Many Groups, Let’s Talk About It

The 4e version of Dark Sun introduced semi-abstract "survival days" to represent the supplies that the PCs had with them.

D&D General How to move a game forward?

It's not really feasible to answer a question like that in the abstract. It certainly can be. I'm currently running a game of Fellowship, which is a heroic fantasy PBTA game. In Fellowship, the GM controls a villainous Overlord, and the power imbalance between the Overlord and the PCs is vast...

    D&D General DALL·E 3 does amazing D&D art

Some images from the Fellowship game I'm running. The big red figure is the Great Mother of the ogres. The city is the city of Fortune's Wheel, a place where the use of violence is a divine taboo and which is dedicated to trade and gambling. The big turtle is the King of the Swamp, and it bears...

Recurring silly comment about Apocalypse World and similar RPGs

I do find it useful to talk about framing scenes explicitly from time to time. I'm currently running a game of Fellowship, which is a PbtA game designed to emulate heroic fiction, most notably Lord of the Rings as well as a lot of JRPGs and cartoons like Avatar and She-Ra. One thing that makes...

Recurring silly comment about Apocalypse World and similar RPGs

The game world definitely has doors, but we're talking here specifically about the case where the GM has put a door in front of the PCs as a barrier to progress. If it's not a barrier (because it's open, or because it's unlocked and unguarded, or because it's flimsy, or whatever) then it's set...

Recurring silly comment about Apocalypse World and similar RPGs

I'd add that even if the fighter rolls poorly, the GM can still have the door open. They just should do something else, as well. For instance, one of the GM moves is "Reveal an unwelcome truth." So the door might fly open to reveal an undead abomination on the other side, which has been alerted...

Recurring silly comment about Apocalypse World and similar RPGs

One thing I'd add to follow up on @loverdrive 's initial post is that the Bend Bars, Lift Gates move in Dungeon World has this trigger: "When you use pure strength to destroy an inanimate obstacle, roll+Str." (Emphasis in original). So if the fighter wants to open the door quietly, or try to...

Recurring silly comment about Apocalypse World and similar RPGs

They are, in fact, the same thing, at least in a PbtA context. Consider D&D. What happens when the player asks to do something not covered by the listed actions in the text? The GM comes up with a way of resolving it, which could be saying yes, saying no, having the player make a check, having...

How Quickly Do You Bounce Off a System?

My group and I bounced off City of Mist, despite loving the noir elements and generally being on board with PbtA-type systems. We were wishy-washy after our first session and finished after our second; luckily it was just planned as a one-shot so we got what we came for.

    D&D General DALL·E 3 does amazing D&D art

Sadly it is gone from my prompt history, but it was something like "Video game concept art. Ink sketch. A knight in black and gold armor stands in front of a massive mech with a similar color scheme. Gritty modern comic book style." A couple of other images using that or a similar prompt follow.
