    Goodman Games DCC License?

Goodman Games is releasing new Dungeon Crawl Classics for 4E, to be on sale in stores September 1st. The exact licensing scheme seems to be secret at the moment. What's your prediction for the licensing scheme behind these releases? http://www.goodman-games.com/upcomingreleases.html

Honestly, if WoTC didn't create it would 4e be D&D?

Some of us call those very small changes indeed. For example, it completely mystifies me why some people call THACO a big change. Is "roll d20 and get at least 10" any different than "roll d20+5 and get at least 15"? Mathematically and probabilistically, they're absolutely the same thing. I...

    Campaign Settings, and The GSL

If it's really just fluff and system neutral stuff -- devoid of classes and stats -- then you don't need the OGL (SRD content). Skip that stuff, you're just confusing the issue at hand. Probably if you release a raw gameless "Fantasy Lands of Shazbot" book, and then a later 4E Gamer's Guide to...

    Oots #569

That thrills me to no end. :) I might never get sick of having Belkar under that particular curse. Go Rich!

    Good 3e boards?

Possibly one that isn't labelled with "4th Edition D&D" in the browser title bar.

    Reply to ENWorld's GSL FAQ

Obviously the GSL is a hot issue -- as evidenced by an opinion piece posted on the front page of ENWorld at the moment (I assume by Morrus). As stated there, some of the items mentioned are obvious, but I don't think they all are. If it had been posted in the context of a thread there would be a...

My Experience of 4e Marketing Failing

I think that the differences between 3E and 4E are some orders of magnitude greater than elves having forced Ftr/Wiz multiclassing in 1980 Basic D&D.

First 3rd Party Product available already...

I'm particularly intrigued by the fact that they also tried mixing the GSL with the Creative Commons license.

    Mike Mearls On the OGL

I'm somewhat amused by this. I've been in a lot of discussions where I point out that Ryan Dancey's original idea for Open Gaming was to have open, iterative advancement of the mechanics. (That's specifically what brought me back to the 3E.) But whenever I've said that I get massive flack for...

Question about GSL - Scott please comment

That's not the part under debate. The part under debate is that they also say this -- If you put down the new toy, you cannot go back to the old toy. That's certainly unlike any contract provision I've ever seen -- once a contract is terminated I don't see how any of its provisions can still...

    OotS 568 is up

The kobold Oracle just sprang way ahead of Belkar in my book. That's just sublime.

GSL: Am I wrong to be concerned?

    Here's a quote from the Wizards website "Software FAQ" ( http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/oglfaq/20040123i ):

You reap what you sow - GSL.

I quote from the Wizards website (SRD: Frequently Asked Questions). It can't possibly be disrespectful to do something Wizards literally told them to do, in public, and in writing. ( http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/srdfaq/20040123c )

    4e Equipment list and nostalgia

2 months ago, playing 1E Tomb of Horrors. Kept the players from jumping into the sphere of annihilation themselves. See link.

    When did Vancian Spellcasting arrive?

The same basic spell system (and core spells) were the kept in the game from OD&D, 1E, 2E, and 3E. In some cases the kernel of certain spell descriptions was actually copy-and-pasted through all the editions. For many of us it's a key characteristic of what makes D&D (it was usually the largest...

How were you first introduced to D&D?

That's exactly how I learned D&D: Saw gushing reviews in Games magazine --> requested it for a birthday --> read the boxed set --> taught all my friends and always DM'd since day one. Of course, D&D was a different game at the time (~1979). I agree that you basically can't do that today. And...

    Age and Mortality

Hmmm. Maybe that argues for some sort of level-cap on nonhumans.

    Poll: 1E or 2E?

Rules Cyclopedia is definitely a high quality production and possibly one of the most solid, elegant, time-tested set of D&D rules ever. For me I do like the flexibility of having separate races, classes, and multiclasses for some mix-and-match options, and lacking that RC feels kind of thin...

    Humans as default

Common misconception. In OD&D & 1E, races & classes were separate. Elves in OD&D automatically got to be multiclassed fighter/magic-users. (Only in Basic D&D were races & classes collapsed.)

    Poll: 1E or 2E?

Common misconception. In OD&D races & classes are separate -- elves are inherently multiclassed fighter/magic-users. (Only in Basic D&D were they collapsed together.)
