Would love input on changes made to Ranger

I under stand that some tables want to move the Ranger to the top of the damage per turn pecking order. This build accomplishes the task at the expense of someone's else favorite class moving to the back of the bus. Encounter pacing has a large effect of the way the classes compare but the...

Would love input on changes made to Ranger

There's a feel of letting the rest of the party soak all the enemy attacks and then the ranger just prances around and murderates everything. Moving the 11th level abilities down to 7th and making them better seals it. I was with some of the stealthing but the collective effect makes a kiter...

Would love input on changes made to Ranger

If the PHB ranger had been printed like this I wouldn't have batted an eye. I assume you mean Spells known equal Wisdom plus half level rounded down. Added Charisma as a required stat would not be an improvement. The spell slots look identical. The major difference here is the additional...

    Beast Master Ranger Alterations

To compare some of the actual numbers involved perhaps you might check out the spreadsheet I did for my houserules: http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?470944-Alternate-Ranger-s-Companion-just-a-few-tweaks/page2 First of all, I think you included the key House rule for any kind of...

D&D 5E (2014) Hypothetical Campaign: No ASIs, Only Feats.

I just lower the cap to 18. If folks are aiming to cap, they cap early. And if they don't want to the stat gap is one less. And we don't do rolling for stats. If challenging PCs is actually difficult at the higher levels dropping everyone's numbers by 1 or 2 can't hurt (we're not there yet...

D&D 5E (2014) Hypothetical Campaign: No ASIs, Only Feats.

Some of the feats are half an ASI. You can still get to 20.

    D&D 5E (2014) 9 1/2 Warlords

My understanding is that the SRD has no bearing on the DMsGuild products. The SRD is for OGL-based products. The DMs Guild has open season on the rules and the Realms. A completely different opportunity and exactly the place for modifications of the full rules.

    D&D 5E (2014) Sorcerer/Warlord - Is 5E SRD The Solution or AL The Problem?

In 18 months of running AL at a local store I've never had anyone wanting to make a character they wanted to take to a Con. If they wanted to grind a character that's Con legal they can do that at home or online and be "official". No one bothers with log sheets, they just want to play. That...

Alternate Ranger's Companion - just a few tweaks.

When I did the spreadsheet and looked at the numbers I think -2 for large and -4 for huge is probably appropriate. I might drop the extra +1 for Small and +2 for Tiny but it may work either way. Attached the Excel .XLSX spreadsheet and a PDF of a sample selection (at 5th). The first set is...

Alternate Damage Expressions - Variance & Better Criticals

While looking at the Beastmaster Animal Companion damage amounts, it became apparent that if the very small beasts were brought into viable damage amounts (through adding proficiency) they would still be weak on criticals and generally be pretty boring due to no dice. Plus I wanted a way to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Pteranodon Ranger

Vultures in 5e are Medium. Much larger than even a real world Condor, but viable for a fantasy world. Probably a Jackal, but imagine a Wolf. It's the creatures they eat. If a small character can ride a vulture, pterodactyl seems fine.

    Ranger houserules and homebrew

Seeker's Bow is a modified Booming Blade. I didn't recognize it after you added 4 more optional damage types and increased the range from a hard coded 5 to weapon range (up to 600). I see the damage die was lowered to d4 from d8 but I think the main advantage is giving the Ranger a huge...

    Ranger houserules and homebrew

Personally, the idea that an animal companion isn't useful unless it is improving your combat attacks bothers me. You get this extra zone of control (including reaction attacks), they can soak attacks, they make perception checks (often better than the Ranger), and an optional attack without...

    Ranger houserules and homebrew

I wouldn't allow Thunder damage - thunder damage works on almost everything. Poison is probably a trap option. A versatile Cantrip with a fiddly effect. Lot's a interaction questions would be raised. Does it work with Sharpshooter? Spell Sniper? Can I add my Magic Weapon powers? Again...

    Ranger houserules and homebrew

This is all pretty complicated although I could see a Downtime activity (10 days) where you can make an area (same size as Primeval Awareness, or up to 6 mile radius) treated as Favored Terrain. Kind of a Home Turf ability. The rest looks too much. Looks OK, what is the refresh. I assume on...

    Ranger houserules and homebrew

Not sure what you are saying here. Animal Companions can already be mounts for small characters. Now if you are saying that you would allow Large Companions as long as they were on the short list of CR 1/4 or lower large mounts (Riding Horse, Camel, Draft Horse) then I agree with allowing some...

    Ranger houserules and homebrew

Let's begin at the end; with the goal: bring the class up to the level of the paladin. So what makes the Paladin so much better? Paladin 1: Divine Sense as a cantrip (for practical purposes - it is an at-will ability taking an action) Lay on Hands as a pseudo-cantrip/pseudo-spell with a daily...

Alternate Ranger's Companion - just a few tweaks.

I'm going to work up the numbers on this and possibly add Monstrosities with no special magical attacks that are Beast-like (hippogriffs, griffons, owlbears, etc.). Maybe at level 11 with an additional -1. Probably just the stuff in the DM Basic rules so I'm not giving anything away.
