[PEACH] My take on Beastmaster Ranger

You could use your 'trade-attack-for-beast-attack' rule but not grant the ranger's proficiency bonus in extra damage. Add in Hunter's Mark for the pet and it would be fine. Happy New Year!

[PEACH] My take on Beastmaster Ranger

In the original post you removed the reference to having Extra Attack. Thus it reads like you get a pet attack and bonus action attack at 3rd (which can be any weapon). Then get 3 attacks at 5th (Replace one of the attack action attacks, plus a bonus action attack). With no restrictions using...

    Adjustments to Ranger Abilities

Favored Enemy is clearly laid out as a Role Play ability (or Ribbon) in the April 2015 Unearthed Arcana by Rodney Thompson http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/modifying-classes Now a free Hide or Dodge might be a weak or strong ability but it is still a combat bonus. However, let's look...

[PEACH] My take on Beastmaster Ranger

I'm pro-house ruling but the DPR problem is dependent on what animal companion you are allowed. The 'legal' giant poisonous snake is in the same range as the Colossus Slayer with Hunter's Mark active (and has a much better attack bonus). The beasts from the PHB are more in line with normal one...

Alternate Ranger's Companion - just a few tweaks.

Current thinking is Large pets get -2 less proficiency bonus the balance larger hit dice (+1 hp/HD) and bigger attacks (from one-hander range to two-hander). So the CR scales, but Large adds less proficiency.

[PEACH] My take on Beastmaster Ranger

Over the last year and a half the main complaints and table variance about Beast Master fall into 3 categories IMO: 1) Action Economy 1a) Verisimilitude problems Animal Companion feels like a unresponsive robot - only acting when commanded. Has less autonomy than Mounts, Summons, or Animated...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ability check & Proficiency skills

That's not a failure, it's a feature. The 'rulings not rules' nature of 5e is what allows interesting variance to match individual tables gaming style.

D&D 5E (2014) Vampiric Touch Opportunity Attack Ruling?

RAW or balance is important only so far as it facilitates whatever the table considers fun (what Jeremy Crawford refers to as RAF). For some, fun requires RAW. And/or balance. For others, the 'rule of cool' is good enough. I usually float around somewhere in the middle. My second post was a...

D&D 5E (2014) Vampiric Touch Opportunity Attack Ruling?

I can picture a wizard/monk striking someone with Vampiric Touch strike 5 times on their turn and adding their unarmed damage plus ability mod. Ya know, cuz that'd be cool. Or an eldritch knight doing it 9 times with the right feats. Cuz why not?

D&D 5E (2014) Vampiric Touch Opportunity Attack Ruling?

RAW I'd say no. You make a melee spell attack as an action. If it said as an action or reaction then you could. You could not use it with the Extra Attack feature either.

    D&D 5E (2014) Berserker Barbarian Fix?

Optional Combat style: Twin Strike - when using a light melee weapon in each hand you strike as a single melee attack. Combine the dice and add modifiers once. This can be used any time you are allowed an attack. May not be combined with Two Weapon Fighting. (Dual Wielding allows the use of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Berserker Barbarian Fix?

The hyperbole is strong with this one. Let's go back to -4/-8 for dual wielding. ;) The main problem with dual wielding is that fans of 2 weapon fighting want it to be the highest DPR when the design says 2 handed is the best DPR. Its shtick is supposed to be extra attack but then Feats...

D&D 5E (2014) Is it worth taking damage in order to do your stuff?

I agree that everyone should find a fix that works for them. There are lots of options. Karma/Luck/Fatigue covers the poison conundrum with what 'might' have happened. The HP as 'plot armor' position covers those types of HP loss as what 'almost' happened opposed to trying to model what did...

D&D 5E (2014) Surprise and when to roll initiative?

It would be reasonable to use the group skill checks rule if the group as a whole is trying to be stealthy (half success or better).

D&D 5E (2014) Is it worth taking damage in order to do your stuff?

Seems like a 1e, 2e, or 3e system should be workable. Second Wind (and other non-magical HP recovery) is Temp HP, no HD healing on a short rest, and no heal to full overnight. 1e: 1 hit point recovered per day of full rest. 2e: 1 hit point recovered on a long rest, 2 per day of full rest, 3...

D&D 5E (2014) Is it worth taking damage in order to do your stuff?

Treating healing like any previous edition should be an option on the table. The basic terminology hasn't changed. I can understand why the didn't reprint those options in the DMG. With HD recovery and overnight healing, I find that players cue off crits and when characters are reduced to 0...

Errata for Monster Manual and DMG Posted

After reviewing the table in question I propose fixing it with an entry for "Harlot" at the #1 spot then rolling a d20 for randomization. Thus making the table functional, more authentic, and non-alphabetized. Which may also explain why no one knows where the Shire is -- halflings reroll '1's.
