Fair Use of Treasure Generation Tables

I feel like people are using the wrong calculus here. If you put up a hobby product that was clearly fair use, and WotC asked you to take it down or they'd sue, would you really press the issue in court? Ultimately the issue, as a hobbyist, isn't whether it's fair use or not, but whether WotC...

Fair Use of Treasure Generation Tables

If he were only referencing it, he wouldn't need to worry about fair use... I'm pretty sure the legal concept of fair use only has relevance in cases where you would otherwise be infringing upon copyright. Here's an analysis of fair use tests for non-lawyers. From what I can tell, none of the...

    When will PDFs be over?

    None. Someone has to try.

    1st ed AD&D multiclassing

You can simulate 1st ed multi-classing in 3e by using the gestalt rules and applying a level adjustment. +2 LA seems about right to me, and I think that was the very rough consensus last time I saw this issue brought up. (It means a cleric/wizard's spell-casting would track with a...

Laptops and PDA's at the table... what do you use?

I have an ASUS 901 and it is pretty perfect for me. Running Ubuntu, it gets about 5-6 hrs battery life, and never gets in the way. (It's easy to have both a pad of paper and the netbook in front of me, which is good for both gaming and work.) I actually use it as my primary computer now. The...

    Art Recycling

I don't care that much if it's at least appropriate. But open Manual of the Planes to the gatecrasher prestige class (p 142). Does that look like a rogue trained in Arcana to you? No, it's recycled art from the Book of 9 Swords. It bothers me a little more that the Manual of the Planes...

    When will PDFs be over?

Yeah, I did that before posting, thanks. :) The OP is calling for the end of PDFs... as the exclusive and dominant way to distribute e-books. He wants to be able to buy books in formats other than PDFs. He's frustrated that he can only get books in PDF form. You're inferring something into...

    When will PDFs be over?

What's up with the false dichotomy here? No one is asking for publishers to deny you your pdfs. They could give you multiple formats when you buy a digital text. As you say, it's somewhat easy for a consumer to convert between pdf and some other format. It's even easier for the publisher...

    When will PDFs be over?

I'm a little confused... what makes you couldn't do any of the above if each book came in another format?

    Air bubble in dice-affecting rolls?

Why should it? Getting one number twice as often as the others is actually not that unusual in such a small sample size. There's a reason people use statistical tests, and it's because our intuitions on the meaning of data are often wrong. If it were to happen in play, of course, the fact...

    Factors Affecting CR and EL

Storm elementals are the most ridiculous example I've personally seen. I think the CR9 version can do a 30d6 AOE attack every few rounds... (note that said attack has the capability of healing other storm elementals, if you encounter a group of them.)

    Tracking Alignment

Huh, I'd say that should have been a motion towards chaos, not evil. You didn't act out of revenge or even self-preservation but for what you thought was the greater good.

    Air bubble in dice-affecting rolls?

A chi-squared test would: it tests whether a particular distribution fits the data.

    Good/Evil vs. Law/Chaos

They were chosen with the presumption of familiaraity with the works of Zelazny, Moorcock, and other New Wave sci-fi authors who emphasised the ideas of order vs. chaos in their work. A much better assumption in the late 70's early 80's, I guess... :) My own take is more along the...

    Monk variant, balanced off warlock

The problem with a death ability is that I wanted all techniques to be usable at-will. So there's a Fatal Strike technique which paralyzes someone if they have less than 100 hp, and kills if they're helpless (which, of course, is an effect of being paralyzed. :) ) You could describe that as...

How does that negative-level-till-you-gain-a-level rule work?

Actually, that's exactly how my group plays it. The point wasn't to lower the amount of book-keeping, but to reduce the penalty of dying. Mostly so our DM can give us quite lethal encounters and not feel quite so bad about it... :) (There was a point where we had 1-2 PC deaths per session...

    2nd ed clone

I'd say that 1e and 2e were at least as compatible as 3.0 and 3.5. To that extent, it's not as worthwhile to start a complete new project for 2e. Most people I knew actually played a mix of 1st and 2nd editions.

GSL vs. no GSL Forked From: Where are all of the campaign settings?

I am definitely not any type of lawyer[1]. But are you sure about that? I know that dealing with the GPL involves dealing not with contract law but with copyrights and licenses. This was confirmed pretty recently in the US courts. I don't know enough about law to know if the OGL would work...
