    Trademarks and RPG:s

Those interested in these matters should check out Scrivener's Error, especially the essays on copyright, trademarks, and fan fiction. The author is a lawyer who often takes cases in the publishing industry. (For instance, he represented Harlan Ellison when he sued AOL.) While you might...

Fan Site Policy: When is it coming?

It's probably a bad idea for to assume we understand the law from reading a small part of it, so I looked for some more context. The OP's claim seems to be correct; there have been explicit court-rulings in this matter. This analysis also agrees.

GSL & CC - Do they play together?

While it might be good advice to avoid the GSL, that doesn't mean that asking questions about its current incarnation is moot. And the point under consideration had absolutely nothing to do with using loopholes or being sneaky!

It's probably better to use wikipedia's style unless there's a specific, well thought out reason not to.

Display of news items on main page: Order?

I fixed the scrollbars (to my satisfaction, anyway!) in FF3 by adding the following rules to userConent.css: @namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml); @-moz-document domain(www.enworld.org) { .feature, .article { height: auto ! important; } } This simply makes the article/feature...

Sensing the presence of magic - isn't the mechanic backward?

That's not really true. D&D doesn't stand in isolation; it draws from the rich pool of fantastical literature out there. That powerful magic is easier to detect is pretty much a given in most narratives in the fantasy genre. Deviating from narrative expectations in the name of your own...

    Delay and sustain

RAW, readying an action isn't as flexible as delaying; you must specify the action. I'm asking if anyone can see balance problems with simply not letting a sustainable power run out while delaying. Given that flying effects seem to mostly take a sustain action, I could see this coming up quite...

    Delay and sustain

By the RAW, you can't continue to sustain a power if you choose the delay action. Given that using a sustain action is supposed to represent a continuous effort, this doesn't sit very well with me. Would there really be any balance problems with allowing a character to continue sustaining...

Mechanics vs Description (Forked Thread: Disarm rules)

I imagine disarming could be tactically useful, preventing the enemy from using OA. And working together, PCs could easily force the creature out of the square and then snag the weapon themselves.

Mechanics vs Description (Forked Thread: Disarm rules)

People want a disarm mechanic because some players like the idea of disarming enemies. So, the mechanical result should be such that: The player feels that they accomplished something cool and useful in combat. The DM doesn't have to worry about PCs constantly disarming enemies instead of...

Healing Skill Check On The Dying

The decision of which check to try for seems a bit meta-gamey... why not just make one Heal check? If you make a DC 10, the target can use a second wind. If it has none left (or chooses not to, I guess) then it stabilizes if the result beat the DC 15.

    Why'd they change the Lamia?

Given that the lamia is an actual mythological entity, it's weird to give that name to a creature which has little in common with it. Admittedly, the Greek lamia had a serpents body rather than a lion's[1], but it's a heck of a lot closer than a swarm of bugs. If they thought the lamia concept...

What the heck does Hidden mean!!

It would be nice if they gave some bloody examples of how Stealth was intended to be used. I don't really care too much for the rules technicalities, but I'm playing a rogue and would like to actually use Stealth on the battlefield. Right now have now idea what's appropriate.

Secret extra Lightly Obscured rule in the DMG

Perhaps the DMG went to print after the PHB, and they slipped the rule in then? I remember reading an account of a 3.0 slip-up like that: they realized that druid animal companions were way to good after the PHB was printed, so they added an extra rule in the DMG.

Monster Manual: What's missing which has impacted you?

They were kind of weird, even for the 1e FF. This is off the top of my head, as I don't have the book with me. But I read through the FF pretty recently, in the interest of comparing monsters between editions. Basically, they spent all their time hidden in a cave meditating, projecting their...

    Anyone else miss Dispel Magic?

No; a particular implementation of the spell did. That doesn't mean you must remove the concept completely. (And having a handful of spells which turn you into very specific forms isn't really the same concept as freeform shapeshifting.)

Whats up with 10/magic damage reduction?

As others have mentioned, the rules-lawyer answer is no, because falling damage is not caused by a weapon attack. However, I know many DMs feel that's kind of silly, and that falling is more analogous to being hit by a club than it is to "energy attacks, spells, spell-like abilities...
