There is a very simple explanation for how the ship knew without Rush saying anything. The ship is almost certainly analyzing their waste as its recycled and reused by the ship. Also the ship might have detected the bacteria in the water supply.

Did anyone watch it? I know it starts a bit slow, the first episode doesn't seemingly have any of that mythoigical cosmic stuff yet, but I wanted to pass along opinions for her. :-p
