D&D 4E 4e Races and Classes: "Why we changed the gods"

I read and failed to see the reason for gnashing of teeth in this. "Which gods should we put in the default backgrounds?" "The ones the players are most likely to either follow or oppose" Works for me.

How Would You Have Handled the Forgotten Realms?

Advance the timeline... Too much has happened in too short a period of time. Need some distance and some perspective.

    For the first time... apprehension

Which one? Because the only one mentioned so far was an effect of an Epic level Smite from a Paladin. I've yet to hear of a control type ability that forces an opponent to fight them aside from this (divine) one. **Edit; sorry Rechan, I'm faster on the type!**

    Dungeons, Dragons, and Demographics

I posted wrong. Sorry. 33, started with BX D&D when I was 7. I like the look of 4e.

What should WOTC do about Golden Wyvern Adept? (Keep Friendly)

Healing is 'Conjuration' because it channels Positive Energy into someone. Coincidently, Inflicting damage is Necromancy - despite the fact that it channels Negative Energy into someone. How do I know that? Because the Undead are healed by Negative Energy, and by Inflict spells. Why is healing...

    Design & Development: Elite Bulette

Sure. Elite means "These monsters, while designed for level x, are really tough and shouldn't be used in large groups" The point is, the difference between (say) 4 level 10 monsters and 2 level 12 monsters and 2 level 10 elite monsters is more significant than in 3.5 The problem with all the...

You have to read the strip before to get the full context.

No, but that's not what is meant. If you learn to use Fourier transformations (Wizard powers) in a specific way (a tradition), that does imply you have been taught by someone who uses Fourier transformations in the same way. Doesn't insist on it, just implies it.

Specifically, the names - Golden Wyvern, Secret Fire et al. force you to consider a concept in regards to the Wizard. Namely who trained them. Force is the issue. Even 3.5 clerics didn't actually need to worship something. I feel this is a weakness of 3.5 - along with the multiclassing rules...

    Defining its own Mythology

All we have proved is that D&D doesn't emulate fiction well. Again.

How about "Magic User" (possibly the worst name in D&D history)? I survived that, I'll survive almost anything.

Limited Number of Spells and No Spell-Learning for Wizards

I hope not, doing so would rob Wizards of their Arcane heritage. Wizards should have mechanical reasons for seeking out books and tomes. Dammit!

    D&D 4E 4e - Too much change?

Nah, I think that Expert got rolled up into 'Heroic' level so it'll be more like "Sabre River" (the only Companion adventure I remember). I do hope that they include the 4 elements though. Seems like they are. Heroic = Basic + Expert = Dungeon & Wilderness exploration. Paragon = Companion =...

What I don't get RE: FR and High Level NPC's

Fallacy of the excluded middle. There is an optimum density of high level NPCs. Many people feel that FR has got this number wrong and has erred on the high side. That doesn't mean there should be no high level NPCs. Just less maybe.

    D&D 4E D&D 4e = Traveller: The New Era?

Yes, but I am seeing a lot of similarities between D&D 4e and the new World of Darkness. In fact, point for point the same things are true. The result? WW don't seem to be crashing and burning. So, all in all - it could go either way. Right? Don't worry, Be happy!

    Mike Mearls comments on design

It's true that CR etc. are only really good as guidelines - however... When DMing your first game, CR is really hand to ensure you don't either present dull speedbumps or TPK. It's a good guide. CR works at lower levels. Hopefully by the time you are running higher levels you can learn to...

Here's hoping they explicitly state this in the rules.

I've made up my mind...for now.

I can no longer spend the amount of time it takes to run 3.5 that it takes me. I enjoy running D&D, but 3.5 has ground me into dust with DM prep time. I never liked AD&D (1st or 2nd), and my group doesn't like BECMI D&D. If 4e is quicker prep time than 3.5, and is fun to play, we'll play...
