What's the benefit of Pinioning Vortex?

It's about control. This effectively removes a creature from the battle temporarily. This changes the control of the battlefield, as the creature no longer takes opportunity attacks. It also gives the defenders, strikers, and anyone else to get in to position below the creature and hold their...

How does the wizard compare now?

Wow. None of this accords with what I've seen or the wizard players I have talked to. The wizard has been doing an excellent job of controlling (and being all-around versatile in and out of combat). Yes, the dailies do work best, but aren't they supposed to?

    Class Overview - Powers

And an Earth warden has a boatload of HP. I just started playing a mid-heroid tier Earth warden, and they also have a fair amount of abilities to lock down enemies in a small area. It's amazing.

Why do dragons do so little damage?

Really? Perhaps its a demonstration of something about people who read the manual, instead?

Tiefling, Dragonborn : have they gained traction ?

No, that's simply not helpful. If you are in a collaborative creative enterprise, you should always try to accommodate the others in your enterprise. Simply shutting others out, even if you think it is reasonable, is antithetical to the collaboration.

    MM2 Excerpt: Heroslayer Hydra

I think that DMs should look at things like this monster, especially if they think that it has the power to really screw with their particular PCs, as an opportunity to create a skill challenge to determine some way to get an advantage against the monster. Perhaps the PCs can find some way to...

    The Sandbox And The Grind

4E is better at telling a heroic story. Sandboxing will work if what it does is give players the opportunity to find themselves in the kind of story that they want. E.g., if they want to go fight orcs, they go fight orcs. In every game, there is no real heroism in facing challenges that far...

    Dumb terminology question...

Those interested in the sandbox style play may want to read a couple of articles used recently in a university level RPG class. These articles deal with the idea of play, as unrestricted as possible, vs. work, which is perilously close to the quest mechanic of many games. These readings are...

New player asking for some advice/help, please. 3e vs 4e. Which one is for me?

4E should put far more emphasis on the players, if used correctly. I suspect that the DMG II will help people adapt to this. The DM should be willing to let the players add to the story based on what they want to be able to do with their skills. This doesn't mean they should always succeed, but...

New player asking for some advice/help, please. 3e vs 4e. Which one is for me?

From a the perspective of a player making a character, it may seem true that 4E is more restrictive. From the perspective of a DM, this is entirely wrong. There is far more for a DM to be able to do in 4E, if only because you are not tied down to the same restrictive way of constructing effects...

    A couple of Undead

I was suggesting that you get rid of the aura altogether and simply use the reaction, perhaps slimmed down to two options like a push/slide, a basic attack, or a recharge. This would make the thing far less complicated and give it more actions, like an elite should have.

    A couple of Undead

One thing that you may want to do is change the Consume Soul thing to an immediate reaction when anyone dies within 10 to 20 squares. You may want to up the result, then, but the change should help give flavour and will naturally limit the useage to maximum 1/round.

Do You Enjoy The Rogues New Role?

Excellent thinking. So, are you saying that you want the Rogue to be a poor fighter in a fighting game?

    Dead Devas

Almost exactly what the Dragon article says.

    Sorcerers too powerful?

Sorcerers in general, and especially dragon sorcerers, will be more up-front than warlocks, since sorceres have a lot of close powers that target everyone in the area. This means getting a sorcerer where there is access to a lot of enemies. I would feel much more comfortable playing a warlock...

Do You Enjoy The Rogues New Role?

This is simply insane. There is absolutely nothing in the new Rogue classes that prevents one from actually developing the skills necessary for stealing. Indeed, they remain the classes that have the easiest access to the required skills.

What "classic" races are left? -- Forked Thread: PH3 Playtest Race: Wilden

Now would you, or others, be happy with a combination of race and character class, like the Racial Character Classes of Rifts? Savage species had a strange mock-up of classes designed to create a level adjusted PC over a series of levels, but the expectation for a PC in 4E is that they would...

Half-Elf Emissary - weirdest paragon feature

This is a great example of the conservative thinking of D&D players. The bonuses given out by this paragon path and by thw Warlord class do not have to be passive bonuses that are there because of the fabric of the universe, they can be there because of activity by the character. Simply because...

    GTS 2009 D&D Seminar - the Rouse discusses D&D

What supplement are you referring to? Changing this design ethos would likely be a mistake. If you have detailed rules for fighting, then players will fight. Abandoning the centrality of these rules in what is clearly a fighting game is probably a bad idea. The real change in design ethos is...

    PH3 Playtest Race: Wilden

Dude, I'm sorry to ruin it for you, but they killed these guys off in the Manual of the Planes. Completely wiped out. (Of course, there is a line about how they may be out there somewhere...) Except that nobody who wants to play a dwarf will instead want to play a plant-man. Really? Many...
