    Footwork Lure and Passing Attack

If you can't shift to the target square with the given amount of movement, then the movement doesn't happen. So no footwork lure with a reach weapon.

Easy: Your readied action is your next turn.

    PHB2 sold out!

given the actual sales numbers, the supposed "Wii Strategy" would be the dumbest move ever. If Nintendo had kept up to demand, they would have had more money in sooner. Support for such a theory is about as good as 911 conspiracy theories.

    PHB2 sold out!

This is a sad statement on the extreme and irrational conservative nature of the standard D&D player.

Reflections on the Barbarian and Avenger

I must concur with PC (really no surprise). Excellent work.

    First post, first game!

Don't shy away from being upfront with your players. Tell them that you have some ideas with how the story should go and that you want them to be as free as possible with their input. You might also want to note that, as a beginner, you may have to limit their options because of what you're able...

What can we expect from DMG2

One thing that I am sure will be in the book will be suggestions for running D&D with far more ability for player input into what most players feel are DM-only areas. For example, take DMG pg 42 (the best page in the book): there are rules there for giving reasonable actions to PCs who take...

    New Penny Arcade Podcast

I don't think that it would have been that obvious. There are many different powers out there and Wheaton was playing a class that was yet to see print. Perkins may not have been intimately involved with the development of this class and may not have been aware of the mechanics of each power...

    Question to WOTC

This attitude is not productive for yourself or for people in general. What copyright does specifically bar is easy to discover in most cases and there are many fair uses of copyright material. Creating the precedent of asking permission for new uses of said material is not good for the exchange...

PHB2 Races = Mos Eisley Cantina

A classic example of the GM-in-control paradigm of most RPGs.

    New Penny Arcade podcast

Given the time zone, I don't expect any change in the status of the file for about three hours.

    The Wheel of Time RPG

Floating around the web somewhere is a pretty decent D&D 3.5 upgrade for the WoT system. As far as Aiel being better than their class, I always assumed that the average Aiel was simply higher level than people from other areas. They certainly have more opportunities to gain XP! wotmania.com...

Mystery investigation social interaction and gaming systems

The system does matter, mostly because most systems allow players to utterly fail at finding clues. The GUMSHOE system (Esoterrorists, Fear Itself, Trail of Cthulhu, Mutant City Blues) is specifically designed to make it so that players never fail at finding clues.

    Piracy

Perhaps you should change your opinion of the law, not your opinion of humanity. Nothing was actually taken away from anyone through the act of distributing electronic copies of a book. All that was violated was a state-enforced prohibition intended to grant rewards to a producer ovre and above...

    Piracy

Everyone who distributed copies infringed on copyright. Simply having the copies in one's possessions is not an infringement. There may be laws that make such possession a crime, but these are not tradiationally part of copyright law.

    "Why do we do it?"

Hey, I'm an instructor of a university course on RPGs. Could you do me a favour and PM me your bibliography? Any information on your paper would be interesting to see, really.

    Star Trek: RPG

Well, many Alternity campaigns could have been like this. The Star*Drive setting certainly encouraged such gameplay, though the rules may not have helped.

    Star Trek: RPG

One of the fascinating thing that I discovered running ST RPG sessions was the willingness of many players to accept the technobabble and solutions seen in the TV shows, even those not incredibly familiar with the series. This didn't happen for every player, but most interested in playing, even...

Dungeon layout, map flow and old school game design

While I like the idea of this essay, I have a problem with the author's rather short dismissal of The Lost Tomb of Martek. In the Lost tomb of Martek, there are a number of sections that must be completed. Thus it could be argued that these are not true branches, but rather a line with an...

Orc and Pie: The Skill Challenge

Very funny. But it does show how 4E ruins simple adventure design. ;)
