I think the rules intend that the PCs will be effective, heroic, and enjoyable. I think that ruling that the magic takes the PC out of harm's way makes the most sense.

Phantom Steed is an excellent ritual, especially at Paragon Tier. You should be able to create eight flying steeds that travel at speed 20 quite often. And remember that up to 4 people can aid another with any ritual.
