I tailor my encounters and adventures to the strengths and weaknesses of the party, so I would consider that they did not have access to as high a level spells as they might otherwise.

That's a very good idea. The XP charts and whatnot did not really change in the DMG, so that's not a necessary update. The SRD is missing WotC "Intellectual Property" but you're still got most of the monsters in there. I wouldn't spend more money that you need to though - I can't speak for...

I think there's some free d20 Modern adventures on the WotC website that are pulpy, but don't quote me on that.
