Whats the ECL of an Awakened Dog for a PC?

I would argue that a "dog" hit die is not equal to a level in any class -- thus I would not count them as part of the ECL on a one-for-one basis. This breaks with the system set forth in Savage Species -- but that book, in fact, specifically recommends NOT allowing awakened animals as PCs and...

    Spontaneous Druids

The 3E Dark Sun site had an alternate Druid -- spontaneous caster with limited # of spells known. You can check www.athas.org for it. It may have since been "revised" so if you can't find it there, let me now and I can send you a copy. It's a workable variation but I've found one problem...

    Romance of the Three Kingdoms

If you want an "abbreviated" version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Asiapac Books did a 10-volume comic series in trade paperback form. I picked mine up several years ago in Hong Kong, but I've seen them around comic shops before. You could also try their website...

Savage Species is AWESOME...and this is why

I posted a question on the WOTC boards asking why guidelines for awakened animals and reincarnated characters weren't put in Savage Species. Rick Redman (one of the authors) responded thusly: I have to say that I disagree with his analysis, as both awakened and reincarnated animals can speak...

Abilities in exchange for Experience points: Good or Bad Idea.

I worked on creating rules to allow people to spend xp to buy stats, new spell-casting ability, skills, feats, attack bonus, etc. Then Mutants & Masterminds came out and my problem was solved! Suggestion: mixing the standard level-based system with powers for xp points is not a good idea. If...

    Monte Cook Sorcerer (some help)

From my experience in gameplay, I'd say: MC's sorceror is SLIGHTLY more effective if you want to play a straightforward combat sorceror (magic missile, fireball, etc.) The extra spells known and hit points do not overpower the class -- they are almost completely balanced by the higher spell...

How do I make it really "low-magic"?

When I want to run a "low-magic" campaign, I simply use a game system that's better suited to that genre, rather than try to rewrite D&D to make it work...

    goodbye clerics... and paladins

Different strokes, I suppose.... I can't stand Divine vs. Arcane in D&D precisely because there is no "vast difference" as you claim. In fact, the magic is exactly the same -- except divine casters can heal. I like the idea of dropping the divine vs. arcane distinction, separating priests from...

    The Barbarian as Swashbuckler

My problem with considering hit points so "abstractly" is the slow way in which they are recovered. If they really represent luck & skill as much as actual hardiness, they should return at a MUCH faster rate (perhaps per hour, like vitality in Star Wars). I have trouble imagining D'artagnan or...

    Favorite Polymorph Self Forms?

Actually the most recent version of Polymorph Self can be found in the Psionic's Handbook errata at http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/er/er20010819a This version does limit the forms by hit dice....

    D&D meets Feng Shui

I've played in such a game. The GM and I created variant archetypes for the game (it was an Al Qadim setting). I think I may still have those archetypes, as well as the "traditional" fantasy archetypes we used... The problem I had with the game was that the GM tried to meld the two magic...

Savage Species- is there something wrong with me!?

Re: Re: Savage Species- is there something wrong with me!? Oddly enough, there are no rules or suggestions for reincarnated characters or awakened animals. The authors feel that animals are not "suitable" for PCs.... a very strange opinion, given everything else in the book.

    Reincarnate and ECL

Although Savage Species is a good book, it is not useful for this situation -- it does not address reincarnation at all. I asked about this on the WOTC boards and Rich Redman (one of the authors) answered: Of course, this really avoids the question as reincarnated PC can speak, etc., ....

[Savage Species] Survivor Prestige Class ...

I don't understand the concern. You're worried that players will want to play a 1st-level COMMONER and switch to this class? Well, what's the problem? Such a character would have an incredibly low-level of survivability....

Stupid question: Wild shape + alter self stack?

Well, I see no reason why you couldn't CAST Alter Self while Polymorph Self is already in effect. However, a Druid can not use his Alter Self ability while in wildshaped form. According to the wild shape description "The druid also retains her own type (for example, humanoid), extraordinary...

    Everything in 3.5e doesn't suck!!!

Agreed. The exact preparation varies by the type of tea. Still, I almost never put sugar in any tea -- except for iced tea. I'm too much the southerner to avoid that, I suppose.... Oh, and for "things that don't suck about 3.5e": revising spells to make them more clear and better balanced.

Which single non-core 3e book do you use the most?

Books of Eldritch Might 1 & 2. As a side note (I don't want to derail this thread), I'm surprised by how many people have said "Magic of Faerun." I'm curious -- what have people found so useful with that book? After first telling my players they could use stuff from that book, I've had to...

    healing HP's by resting

But unfortunately they DO equal wounds in D&D, regardless of the "rationale" used. To have the mechanics reflect the explanation, one would have to implement something similar to the Star Wars system (as KaeYoss mentioned).

    summoning problem- need help

If you think this might be difficult, how do you deal with the effects of spells like divination, commune, and planar ally? Think of how churches would operate if they had DIRECT communication with their god -- a much greater effect, I think, than simply being able to magically communicate with...

D&D 3.x Playing in a DND3E game with no magic items

I have played in several "low-magic" (and even "no-magic") campgains and, IME, they simply don't work well. DND is NOT designed for that sort of campaign. Yes, a DM could force the game to work for that type of game -- just like he could make DND work for a Vampire game. But why would you want...
