    Do you Houserule Sorcerers?

Although I like the way Monte Cook's variant sorceror looks on paper, my players always choose the PHB sorceror instead (as do I when I play). I think that we tend to like "theme" sorcerors, and the Monte's spell restrictions limit those -- in fact, none of the sorceror concepts I've had would...

Craft (poison) or "It takes HOW long???"

In my campaign, I've simply based creation times on the item's value in Gold rather than Silver -- that has worked quite well, is generally more "realistic" (if that term has ANY meaning in D&D), and, most importantly, is more fun.

    Ploymorph

Annis Hag is the best combat form until 14th level, when you can do Stone Giant. Annis Hag: Spd 40, +10 natural armor, Large size, 10-ft reach, Str 25. With MM2, the Firbolg is one of the best choices. You can do it at 13th level and it's much better than a Stone Giant.

I need feedback from experienced DM's

I've been running Return... for almost a year now, and it is one of the most difficult adventures I've ever seen -- not as bad as Tomb of Horrors, but exceptionally hard, none-the-less. Regardless of whatever "extenuating circumstances" there may be, I know that if I were a player in Thulsa's...

    Dragon Disciple...WHY?

my house-rule IMC, I swapped out the bonus spells for +1 caster level at every odd level, and dropped enlargement (although I'll still allow my DD player to get wings). This has worked quite well and seems reasonably balanced.

Wishes & Perversions - Post Yours

This thread illustrates why I, as a player, always refuse any wishes offered to me unless I really trust the DM. This always shocks the other players and DM ("What do you wish for?" -- "No thanks. I don't want the wish"), but I see no need to waste time playing semantics with the DM only to...

Daily Medieval Life sources (but fictional)

Although these aren't fictional books, they are written in more of a "storytelling" mode rather than "encyclopedic." Try Life in a Medieval Village, Life in a Medieval Castle, and Life in a Medieval City by Frances Gies. You can read samples from these books at amazon.com...

    FLGS in Raleigh, NC?

gaming stores Foundation's Edge is easily the best. It is located on Hillsborough St beside the Wachovia bank, across from NC State University. Phone 832-0044 Games Galore is a reasonably good local chain. They have locations in Raleigh on Hwy 70 (781-4263) and on Kildaire Farm Rd in Cary...

    alt. Dragon Disciple PrC?

Well, since most people think that it's a major benefit, dropping it helps balance the spell progression. To be honest, though, I think the enlargement is at least as much of a hindrance as anything. In return for a bump in damage (and possibly 10-ft reach, depending on one's interpretation)...

    Polymorph revisions

Yes. That is the primary reason why it's called "polymorph" (they really need to change the name of the spell currently in use -- maybe to "monomorph"?). Yes, although I reserve the right to impose penalties (-1 or -2 to rolls) to extremely "weird" forms. Exactly, but don't forget the stat...

"Specialist" Sorcerers: How do you balance them?

I encourage my players to choose their spells by some sort of "theme" in my game, but usually that doesn't translate into only one or two schools. Still, I allow them to choose some spells (subject to my approval) from other spell lists (such as Cleric or Druid) if they fit the "theme." You...

    alt. Dragon Disciple PrC?

Changes to the DD in my campgain: Drop "enlargement" (but still allow wings) Drop bonus spells Add "+1 caster level" at levels 1,3,5,7,9 I have a player who is now Sor6/DD5, and her character has worked quite well -- much better balanced than the T&B version, IMHO.

Using polymorph for a huge boost in AC

Polymorph house rules It seems like this comes up about once each month, on average -- someone realizes how screwy the polymorph spells are, and a short discussion ensues. Well, to keep to the pattern, here's a link to my re-writes of the polymorph spells (along with my reasoning)...

    Do Sorcerers need components?

I've offered my players a choice between the PHB sorceror and Monte's (the one I prefer) -- every time they've gone with the PHB sorceror. In their opionions, the extra spells known, hit points, and skills just aren't worth the reduced spell selection and the boost in spell level for so many...

    See Invisibility

I have to say that, as a gamemaster, it would never have occurred to me to try to screw my players with such a strange and narrow interpretation of these spells. I suspect that if I ran my games that way, I soon would not have any players left...
