What book to get? Five Nations or Exploreres Handbook

Another note for "depends where the adventure is". If the adventure is in the Five Nations, pick it up. If you're going to be exploring the darkest depths of Africa... err... Xen'Drik, pick up the Explorer's Handbook.

Running Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil

Curse you! You beat me to it. And argh... can't remember the name. Anyway, we ran through this module and it was a BLAST. Though I could also see it quickly becoming a boring meatgrinder. My suggestion as a DM is to keep a close eye on the party's interest, and try to hurry things along if...

    GRAAAHH!!! [semi-rant/brief]

The new barbarian prestige class: Verber of Nouns Really... it just sums it all up.

    Scout errata?

Given the drawbacks of mounts, not really. They're pretty fragile things. Though the decision there is "do I want a full-attacking scout". Some people will say yes, some people will say no. If you say no, then you won't like mounted archery. If you say yes, then that's one of the few ways to...

    Ring of Blinking - Questions

Like they said :) Basically, when blinking, you're physical half the time and ethereal half the time. This has the following effects: You're always considered invisible. You can walk through thin walls (if you get the blink chance right). ... and miss chances and stuff. So really, the RoB is...

What are the two most useless schools of magic for a Necromancer to give up?

A second vote for background :) Evocation is now one of the weakest schools. The low-level evos are the best area effect spells for damage, but conjuration is steadily taking over. The orbs (and the fire-effect Cone of Cold) from Complete Arcane are conjuration, as are Glitterdust, Web, and...

    Vow of Poverty Help

Time to roll a new character :) Seriously, though... if your GM thinks that that VoP is powerful enough to warrant a +4 LA (AKA "kick me" sign), you're not going to be able to convince him. You can take the most well-reasoned arguments and they're going to bounce. BTW, there have been threads...

Your opinion, Exalted characters polymorphing into demons?

I'm going to weigh in on the side of "no". Exalted is all about the ends never, ever justifying the means. And when "means" becomes "polymorph into a demon", then.... ick. I could see coming up with a new Celestial that closely mimicked the stats, if not the form, and allowing the Exalted...

    Case Study: Wraithstrike

But can't you feel that bite in the air? :) The problem with a spell like Wraithstrike is that it's fine in the original context, for caster wizards. However, you can't expect a spell to be limited to just them; players are creative and will find ways to get access to the nifty toys.

    Case Study: Wraithstrike

It's actually a lot better than a half-Truestrike. Mainly because it acts for the entire round :) There are a lot of spells in C.Adv. that make me twitchy. Not for a primary mage, but for the gish, or the rogue with UMD, or anyone else who can get access to the spell. Wraithstrike (full power...

Archivist - long live the wizard, the wizard is dead.

The real problem with "any divine" is that it includes classes with partial (and delayed) spellcasting ability. Ranger 1 spells can be more powerful than Cleric 1, because the ranger gets them later. Heck, Bless Weapon... 1st level spell that makes crits auto-confirm? Sign me up! I'd keep them...

    The Most Important Metamagic Feats

Chain spell is nice, but amusingly enough it's better as a buffing meta. The chained spell needs to be a ray, and there aren't that many that are. Chain greater magic weapon, on the other hand... It's probably overpriced, but I'm a big fan of Explosive. I'm a soft touch for tossing bad guys...

So How Does Your Group Distribute Treasure?

Just hopping in.... The problem with the phrase "need before greed" is that the words "need" and "greed" have a) immense emotional loading and b) are way the heck out on the spectrum. The phrase polarizes something that should be a conversation and compromise. Our group does a fair-shares...

    BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: Season 2A Part 10; NSCR/9.23.2005. Mid-Season Ending

They are guilty of war crimes, and as such deserve a fair trial whenever they are captured. The danger is not in killing Cylons; the danger is in killing things that look human. We are _visual_ creatures, and it's easy to blur the line between "Cylon" and "that woman-looking thing over there"...

Drow Campaign: SR or no SR?

It depends on how limited you want your player's options to be. If I'm playing a wizard in a known-SR campaign then I have limited effective options; either spend multiple feats on Spell Penetration or the like, or toss Evocations in favor of the (nearly equivalent) Conjurations. I'm still...

    BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: Season 2A Part 10; NSCR/9.23.2005. Mid-Season Ending

Quoted for truth :) This is why you need civilians around the military. Without the presence of a group that is not military but still "human", you end up with "Us pack, others not" mentality. The Cylons are toasters, _at best_, and therefore worthy of nothing. The Galactica crew are a bunch of...

Is there any way for enchantment spells to affect undead and such?

Yeah, undead are aggravating in all sorts of ways. For instance, by my read they are immune to Flesh to Stone (fort save, doesn't affect objects) despite there being no real reason for it. As the previous poster said, Command Undead.

Using Magic Item Pricing Rules - Boots of Freedom

There is a scale factor that considers short-lived spells vs. long-lived spells. Where was it... So that's where expeditious retreat would be more than longstrider - it has a shorter duration.

    Familiars as artillery "spotters"

Nethack! Hey, hands off my blessed +3 grey dragon scale mail! Mine! Mine, I say! On topic... my group had thrown around a metamagic for indirect fire a couple of years ago, but we never did anything more than say "man, that'd be a cool idea". The upgraded version is "setting waypoints". Did I...
