    Scorching Ray Sneak Attacks.

The strange physical laws of Game Balance prohibit it. In each and every case, the second (and third, and fourth...) rays mysteriously bend, as if they had to pass through a fluid, before striking their targets. For the same reason that extra dice aren't multiplied on a crit, they're not...

    Looking for DM screen

Munchkin Master's Screen. Where else can you get the Pizza Topping Table (which I actually used, amusingly enough)... the random d20 table... the bikini material table... Err... uh... yeah. :)

Can someone explain Evard's Black Tentacles to me?

One quick note: the tentacle BAB is equal to your caster level, not 1/2 caster level. Given size and STR, the grapple check is (caster level) + 8. It's a very rude spell. My mage used it and managed to nail both a vile cleric and evil warlock. Good rolling on the cleric, and the warlock didn't...

How do you use spell cards?

You can use pretty heavy stock in an inkjet as long as the paper doesn't make a 180 degree turn, like most HP printers. I've got a pack of 110lb paper (Office Max-esque) that works pretty well. As for cutting the cards up -- get your hands on a guillotine. At least that's what I call it. The...

New MMIII errata and 3.5FAQ update at Wizards

That reminds me of a question I had about the FAQ. I read somewhere that the FAQ stated that prot. vs. evil helped with all charm spells, not just Dominate Person/Monster. I've looked through the spells section, and I don't see anything about protection vs. anything. Help? Page reference? Am I...

Extoll your hate of Valentine's Day (was: Extoll the virtues of your love!!)

I should have done more for my wife. I love her dearly, and didn't even get her a card. What a jerk I am. She got me a card, Windsor-Newton brushes, and one of those spiral brush cleaner jar things. And you guys can't have her!

I got my Tact-Tiles and they are the bomb!

Re: marking lines. You can also score whiteboard to get permanent lines. I've got a "battlemat" that I made out of half a sheet of slick white pressboard. My friend and I cut hexes ( ) into the entire thing. Took a couple of days, but we have a dry-erase hex mat. Found the slick...

    Vow Of Poverty...

I'm currently playing a VoP wizard. It's kinda fun, but did require the GM to create some house rules (as I can see the hordes of "you can't do that!" coming on the horizon...) The character pays XP for learning spells and using expensive components, AKA the Eschew Materials feat. Likewise, he...

Mathematically that much of a difference between these two empower options?

15d6 is more fun :) Handfuls of dice! but will have a greater chance of a midrange result. 10d6 * 150% will have a larger variance. Mathematically they are not equivalent, but probably not enough to care.

    Fiery Dragon's plans for 2005

I bought the Battlebox when it came out, and I've been very pleased. Make that VERY pleased. And, in that vein, a request for you to consider: More reference cards! The fighter player sits down and snags the combat cards at the start of every session. However, we still have to hit the books...

    Common new DM mistakes list...

Charisma is not physical attractiveness. Your ugly half-orc with a negative CHA mod is not "more threatening than the elf rogue over there". He's less threatening. There's just something... bland about him.

    What's wrong with metamagic?

We've started using an interesting (and fun) metamagic variant. Metamagic works off a pool of "points". The size of the pool is (spellcasting stat bonus) + (sum of level adjustments of metamagic feats taken). So, a mage with an INT of 10 and both empower and maximize would have 5 points. INT of...

    Replacement for Cleave

Ummm... hate to be the fly in the ointment, but do you houserule a full attack to only target one creature? Normally you can change targets in the middle of the attack for free. From the SRD:

d20's to d6's: What's the ratio in your dice collection?

Hrm... 4 d20s (my precioussss.... *rolls* 19, 20!) and 14 d6s (2 normals, 12 from a box). My wife has ~6ish d20s, and... uhh... many d6s. 8 "jelly" d6s for up close and personal, and ~72 (2x box of 36) for getting rid of the mooks. Plus random extras. Funny thing, mooks... we normally use...

As a player, what monster/opponent is the most frustrating to fight?

We (6th level party of 4) fought an Ogre Mage last game session. One of the most annoying creatures we've ever had to deal with. Outdoors, and he could fly and we couldn't; went invisible, and my mage had a Glitterdust prepped instead of a See Invis. After he showed up the first time I nailed...

    Complete Arcane, huh

I have been seeing more and more incorrect sample characters. They tend to get picked up in errata (expect Wiz 7/FS 3), but... My gripes with CA are two. First, "Discern Shapechanger" has a line about "Discovering people in disguise". Nice way to shaft the rogue, guys... a 50th level epic rogue...

    Fireball vs. Wind Wall

One thing to remember about the fireball "bead" is that it is a specific exception to the Line of Effect rule. From the SRD: An otherwise solid barrier with a hole of at least 1 square foot through it does not block a spell’s line of effect. Such an opening means that the 5-foot length of wall...

    Cleaving after an AoO

Here's the rationale we came up with: (BTW, we allow AoO/cleave). Cleave is the result of an enemy (Alice) letting their guard down because they assume you are tied up with a different enemy (Bob). However, with Cleave, you can destroy Bob faster than Alice can get prepared; effectively, you...

Sneak attacks within an Obscuring Mist

A related question: If an enemy was in an obscuring mist and hit with a faery fire (which removes some forms of concealment), would the rogue be able to shoot him from 10' away?

Help with a Celestial Wizard PrC

I'm working on a PrC for a wizard in my campaign... capital-G Goody-two-shoes type, using the Book of Exalted Deeds. Influence 1: there is a PrC in BoED called the "Celestial Mystic". I love the flavor of the class, but some of the abilities are a little odd... they get Uncanny Dodge (?) and a...
