    Encounter planning wackiness?

Wow. I really hope Stormtalon is right. '4 normal monster slots per 5 PCs' would be a terrible, terrible way to do it. 1 normal monster slot per PC would make encounter design very easy to scale for module writers.

Rich Baker on the Spellplague and other stuff.

The best thing about having a smartphone is that I can look up memes like lemonparty at work without it showing up in the logs. The worst thing about having a smartphone is that I just looked up lemonparty at work, and there is no place for me to go run and bleach my eyes out.

Loss of Innate Spellcasting (or 'How Dragons Build Lairs')

Hopefully, the Wizard Training and Warlock Training feats will enable you to add a useful ability or two (and a lot of flavor) without having to pile on all the class-level-related baggage that goes with it.

Plot Monsters: Give Dragons & Devils Rituals!

To add to this, it sounds like the encounter system in 4E will actually make this kind of thing EASIER to adjudicate than previous editions. The Chamber of Petrification will become an environmental hazard. Figure out about how long the chamber takes to kill a player, and what precautions can...

The Myth of the Bo9S's Popularity

Magic item frequency is kind of a separate issue, though I see your point. But I disagree that it's 'OK' from a balance perspective if he has to spend a spell to do it. Sure, at low level, that would represent a significant investment on his part. But then again, when that fighter spent 12...

    Abyss versus Far Realm

Now THAT is a Far Realms answer :P Personally, I really like the concept of the Far Realms 'spilling over' into the regular world. At the least extreme end, it allows there to be a sprinkling of weird monsters popping up in different places without having to explain how they fit into the local...

D&D 4E Who has rights to BoEF, and are they in on the 4e OGL

To generalize, I would say that the need to strenuously separate the 'mature' from the 'immature' is one of the hallmarks of adolescence. Lord knows I did a lot of stupid crap to show how 'adult' I was, when I was an adolescent.

worlds and monsters is in my hands

An interesting point that I hadn't considered before. I think we just have very different styles of constructing a game. Or, maybe I am discounting the utility of non-combat-related information. In any case, if 4E comes up short on 'ecology' blocks, that sounds to me like a ripe opportunity...

worlds and monsters is in my hands

As a counterpoint - initially, I loved 3E's more simulative focus (as compared to 2E), and I dove into making sure that everything would 'interact with the world' in a plausible way. Then I realized that it added absolutely nothing to my games, and the players didn't notice that I had given the...

    War Pick; ?d8

Halflings are 4' tall in 4E, putting them just inside the Medium size category, meaning they carry no size penalty to strength. Also, R&C seems to indicate that PC races will have only bonuses, not penalties. That's where all of the complaints about 'halflings as strong as humans' are coming...

The Myth of the Bo9S's Popularity

Wins the thread. In 3E, a first-level spell is equivalent to a ton of skill points, feats, and class abilities for a non-magic character, and that's OK, because it's MAAAAGIIIIC (said in a Doug Henning voice). I think the concept of the 'martial' power source as something equal in power to the...

Mike Mearls on Combat vs Non-Combat roles

I agree that siloing combat and non-combat feats would work well, but I think that the 'non-combat feats give combat bonuses too' paradigm seems to be what they are leaning toward, and I think I'm OK with that.

D&D 4E Typing system in4E (Rich Baker scoop).

Should he recognize a rust monster? (Savage Tide Mild Spoiler)

As much as I also dislike the pre-4E version of a Rust Monster, I do agree with the sentiment that, according to the RAW, your player is out of luck. This whole scenario is actually making me wish for a short reference in the Monster Manual listing 'monsters of similar description'. It would...

Petition to WOTC for POL Map

No kidding. Mapping out the world explicitly would gut all the flexibility of the PoL setting, leaving only its bad parts (lack of rich background and convincing political storyline).

The Myth of the Bo9S's Popularity

I'm hoping that the categorizations of "Extraordinary", "Supernatural", "Spell-Like", and "Spell" will just all go away, and instead powers will be categorized by source: "Martial", "Arcane", "Divine", and, eventually, "Psionic". Whether something is 'magic' or not won't really matter. This...

Dragonborn - will you ban them?

I once played a Saurial in someone else's game, so that pretty much precludes me from removing Dragonborn. I'd never hear the end of it! "Hey, rkanodia, do you remember that time you played a finhead? Finheads are SO COOL!" To be honest, though, I actually LIKE Dragonborn, and I'm a little...

D&D 5E (2014) Critical Hits Appears to be Next in D&D Archive

My suspicion is that the +1 frost weapon does one extra point of frost damage on every hit: the '+1' now modifies 'frost', not 'longsword'. I suspect this because it could fit into the example mentioned, and also, I haven't seen any vanilla +X items from 4E: it's a +1 frost longsword, or a +3...

D&D 4E What changes aren't being made in 4E that you think should be

What about the distinctions between 'extraordinary', 'supernatural', 'spell-like', and 'spell'? I'd drop all of those in a heartbeat, and just label abilities according to their power source: 'martial', 'arcane', 'divine', and eventually, 'psionic'.
