Someone do a pit fiend vs pit fiend fight

Of course not. It would be a huge devilish bongo.

    Opinion: But It's So Gamist!!

The fluff is what you make of it. I'm planning to make a warlord who is, in character, a loudmouthed buffoon, finding himself perpetually shown-up by the other PCs. You know, activate Feather Me Yon Oaf, and proclaim, "You idiots! That ogre would have been mine, if you hadn't had to go and...

Why arbitrary monster abilities are a bad idea.

Oh, I dunno, I imagine that the Ritual of Endless Night is going to take a lot of studying, and bargaining with devils, and trading with distant sages for translations of ancient languages. It's going to take a long time, and certainly someone is going to hear about it, and once word gets out...

How I Stopped Worrying and Learned To Love Standard Plusses

As a DM, I hate being responsible for making sure that the players are keeping up with the Joneses. Many in my group feel the same one - for instance, there's one guy who loves giving out the oddball, bizarro special effect items (his Wand of Wonder chart is about six pages long) and he hates...

Why arbitrary monster abilities are a bad idea.

Agreed. When I first saw third edition, I was impressed and pleased with its sort of egalitarian spirit, with everybody being treated 'the same'. Over time, I came to realize that it just doesn't work out so well in practice - I don't want to spend 15 minutes picking spells and feats for...

D&D 4E So anyone want to see some generic 1st level slimes in 4E?

Once, a DM let me have a tiny Gelatinous Cube as a familiar. Best. Campaign. Ever. Me: "Go for the feet, Wiggles, go for the feet!" BBEEG: "What in the - OH DEAR GOD IT'S CRAWLING UP MY PANTS, HELP HELP GET IT OFF OF ME!!!"

Why arbitrary monster abilities are a bad idea.

Your PCs are enslaving monsters or reanimating their corpses as servants, and so the rest of us can only fight boring monsters to avoid breaking your game. Right.

D&D 4E So anyone want to see some generic 1st level slimes in 4E?

Sure, why not? I've heard that all kinds of crap is spilling out of the Far Realm these days.

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

Sounds plausible. If you're right, then I think it's rather revealing that it says "Recharge 4 5 6" rather than "Recharge 4". It would mean that higher isn't necessarily better - for instance, a monster could have one ability with 'Recharge 3 4', and another with 'Recharge 5 6', meaning that...

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

Straw Man argument, and the Pit Fiend has a 'Languages' block anyway. Looks like you can Fail twice as a standard action.

"Invigorate" might be a sufficiently broad term.

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

Irresistible Command only works on an allied devil. So now he'll need a Wand of Polymorph to go with it :p

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

Something I just thought of regarding 'speed of play': it's true that a save every round for the firetouched mace effect takes a die roll - but then, it does a fixed amount of damage, so you don't have to roll for damage. Combine that with the lack of a duration to keep track of, and I think...

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

To me, it seems kind of arbitrary, since it doesn't take your saving throw into account. For instance, the flametouched mace sets you on fire and causes you to burn every round, without ever having to 'get past' your saving throw score. But I guess you did have to fail an 'AC save' in the...

    Sage Advice - multiclassing

In 3E, if you are a 14th level Fighter and you take a level of Wizard, you can now do everything a 1st-level Wizard can do: a whole lot of things which are all useless. I'd love to see Class Training feats that instead give you just one or two abilities, but have them be equal in power to...

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

Well, he is a leader. Note that you don't get experience points for defeating the summoned minions - whatever a pack of its level 21/22 demons can do, that is assumed to be part of the power of the pit fiend itself.

D&D 4E How should 4E deal with the power of fire?

If the damage types from DDM are an indicator, sonic might be getting merged into 'thunder', and I would posit that knockdowns might become a common side effect of 'thunder'.

I just want to let the record note that I knew this thread was going to follow some very weird paths before I even clicked on it for the first time.

    Simplifying Distance

I personally like the idea of having generic 'zones', where everybody within the zone is assumed to be able to reach other more or less conveniently, and distances inside the zone aren't measured/considered. Area-of-effect spells would affect everyone inside a single zone, or maybe touch all...
