I can confirm I didnt really find it

D&D General Why Editions Don't Matter

I needed the somewhat better flavor/stories Heretic and Hexen (and plugin alternates that were fan made like WoT Quake) to bring me into the twitch I needed some of my favored genre at minimum.

D&D General Why Editions Don't Matter

One of the things I didnt like about Morrowind is that if it had a main storyline it wasnt compelling - Oblivion was more compelling and, I felt some urgency and involvement in the main quest... I was less inclined to just wander around without engaging with it. (It sounds like you didnt find...

D&D General Why Editions Don't Matter

I did some inquiries around here about the DCs DMs would apply for attempting something the ranges were from not allowed at all.. to relatively decent at 15 (and allowed as a reaction). Its not exactly something I have confidence that 5e has helped establish at all. And assuming people really...

D&D General Why Editions Don't Matter

Sure from what I heard 3e went over the limit of well defined into perhaps overly defined... having broad paradigms can be sufficient fairly often. One of the interesting things presented by Amber diceless roleplaying was something I might call variable detail resolution. Sometimes you want a...

D&D General Why Editions Don't Matter

Isnt that the engineering statement ... you can have 2 of three virtues but not all at once?

D&D General Why Editions Don't Matter

Being more DM work is I think not inconsistent with flexibility... it means the DM may be spending time on creating those undefined things instead of deciding other things needed and that could result in a DM being inconsistent or other game play issues (but inconsistency is just a likely...

D&D General Why Editions Don't Matter

For instance with greater flexibility in general there is less well defined common ground between DM and players and fewer result expectations for anyone. Open ended or freeform can also make it hard to prevent ummm "rules" shifting if you want the experience consistent it takes more diligence...

D&D General Why Editions Don't Matter

Arbitrary banning was a distinct strangely opposed complaint aka the Gandalf used a sword argument. In other words genre was both more open and more confined too LOL. Banning is also less flavorful than providing a magical variant (this rune-scribing would of course call on Dex) Perhaps...

D&D General Why Editions Don't Matter

So you like casters toting crossbows snagging a certain feat and buffing dex? I see it as a genre issue to be honest. Back in 1e land I decided that it felt better reflavoring dart throwing as runes that you painted on your staff which you pointed at enemies.. the runes would glow and launch a...

D&D General Why Editions Don't Matter

For me cantrips make casters always feel like casters instead of a dude with a crossbow (3e), or dude chucking darts(1e and I think 2e). They avoid players introducing out of genre flavors and create in genre flavors.

D&D 5E (2014) The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

Real world federal studies from the late nineties I have seen actually say that death spirals are not actually realistic ... continuing to fight at around 95 percent then dropping after the fight is realistic... as is going from near 100 to out of it.

D&D 5E (2014) The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

I speculate that it relates to the myth of the hero... resisting and ignoring injury is supposed to be only something the hero does... ie not something that is a normal evolved trait in humans.

Less identity not defined by DM fiat.

D&D 5E (2014) The Role of Magic Items in early D&D (and today!)

I errata'd that on my own and if the item is 5 levels below yours you get 100% return... with a gradual down to 20 percent if its only at level. You get better at disenchanting or your contacts improve at getting you the real value. The rare/common ratings did not ummm make sense to me.

I made my own Hit pointless D&D felt kind of anti-heroic and wrong genre, perhaps horror fiction or something

A saving throw system a la "mutants and masterminds" could be a rare example which could be the foundation for the eratic response people have on wounds

D&D 5E (2014) The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

Added several from @Lanefan I have a house rule that steals from PF2 where beating a DC by 10 is a critical. This makes higher skill automatically buff criting. It rather makes Precision attack even more frequently useful. Basically this could mean that Harder Maneuver can be seen as a...
