    D&D 5E (2014) Which 5e Should I Propose to My Group? [Updated]

Cthulhu is also going to be considered, but I already know how to pitch that one. :) We are currently playing Savage Worlds in a sci-fi setting, so we've taken a break from fantasy already. Not gonna lie, I'm not "at home" in sci-fi RPGs. It seems like everyone in my group has a different "sci...

    D&D 5E (2014) Which 5e Should I Propose to My Group? [Updated]

I've been deep-diving into my LU books today. There's a lot to like. Does anyone know if there's a fan-created cheat sheet that covers the biggest changes between this and 2014? I'd like to have something for my players but I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

True. I've rarely been happy with the hobby since I started coming here and discussing it - which has been almost 20 years. I think it's easy for me to over-analyze companies, systems, adventures, my group, and my own GMing skills to the point of becoming unhappy. It was easier to be satisfied...

    D&D 5E (2014) Which 5e Should I Propose to My Group? [Updated]

Yes, I guess that would help. I also have access to the Gateway from being a KS backer.

    D&D 5E (2014) Which 5e Should I Propose to My Group? [Updated]

I think there are edge cases where the differences matter. I have another very casual game that meets once every month or so. We usually eat a meal, catch up, and play for about 1.5 hours. That group is 5e. I wanted to experiment with Level Up on my end, since they were using all copies of my...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

I was designing in the 3.5 ecosystem during the announcement of 4E and the GSL. My publisher was determined to go along with 4E, regardless of their preferences for the system, because following D&D was more important than their preferences. (Honestly, if they could have, they would've been...

    D&D 5E (2014) Which 5e Should I Propose to My Group? [Updated]

I don't think my players are even consistent in what they want. Some players might be ok with Level Up, some might want to stick with 2014. I just don't want to lug around numerous systems to run a game. While I was mixing systems with another group, I found that I was getting terribly confused...

    D&D 5E (2014) Which 5e Should I Propose to My Group? [Updated]

"....And start to dream of somewhere To relax their restless flight Somewhere out of a memory Of lighted streets on quiet nights..." "Subdivisions," Rush My group has been bouncing from system to system for over a year now, not finding anything that really suits us. A player suggested we go...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

I guess my question is "which designers"? Members of a team rarely have the exact same opinions. I think 4e struggled because there were factions between... 1) tradition vs new ways to play 2) HP bloat and low damage to make combats take longer vs. quick gameplay 3) bringing in WoW players vs...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

Most recently, I had run it often at my FLGS for D&D Encounters. That was a very different experience than in a home game. 1) The sessions were designed to be short with one combat encounter and maybe one trap, puzzle, social situation. The home experience of running for 4 hours was exhausting...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

After being a 4E apologist for the last 10 years, I ran a 9 month campaign which ended last fall. The result: all my 4e books have been removed from my shelves and put into boxes, ready to go into storage. (For those keeping score, I have no other gaming books in storage.) Moreover, I disliked...

A review of Shadowdark: Streamlined Modern OSR

Yes. I was flipping through my copies this afternoon actually. It's missing customization like specialty priests and wizards, skills. Also has the problem of "too weak" - low hit dice for characters, no spells for starting clerics. It's not really any different from other B/X clones. Mostly...

A review of Shadowdark: Streamlined Modern OSR

What I want... Compatibility with older TSR adventures and settings Customization for players - variety of spells, classes, equipment, ancestries Non "bloated" numbers (limited HP, damage scaling, etc) - primarily for the purposes of compatibility with older TSR material Not too weak...

D&D 5E (2024) Dungeons & Dragons 2025 Monster Manuals show up in the wild.

I wonder how much the deep discounts on Amazon affected the widespread adoption of 5e? I wouldn't have bought 3 PHBs at full MSRP from a LGS.

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

I like having more humanoid statblocks. So the change works for me

D&D General Freeport Trilogy vs Lost City of Barakus

I've run both. Barakus is mostly a dungeon crawl (but it's a good one). There's a lot more opportunities for social scenes in Freeport.

    How Do You Learn Boardgames?

Would it be worth playing Jaws of the Lion as a Starter Set before jumping into Frosthaven? Or would the mechanics be so different as to confuse players when we go to the full game?

    How Do You Learn Boardgames?

I was recently given Frosthaven by a friend who said it was "just taking up space." The guy knew my group loved tactical combat like in 4E D&D and suggested we'd enjoy it. This was a very generous gift. But I must admit, I'm completely overwhelmed. Even the "getting started" tutorial video on...

I'm a little depressed, and I don't want to be the only one.

This is the best kind of thread necro. Thanks for the positive update.

What’s good about Call of Cthulhu 7th Ed? (and what’s not)

Spending Luck gives players more control over their success. The added HP hasn't really affected my character, who rolled so badly he has 15 HP even with the Pulp help. But it's the Luck mechanic, recovering sanity, and more action driven themes that makes it the best for me.
