The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

I think this change is, like many changes, being taken a little to seriously. Some spells don't work anymore, but how is that a bad thing ultimately? It means you need new strategies for these creatures. Why get tied into knots over things like Hold Person, one of the most boring spells in the...

Yes, yes, this all makes sense!

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

I'm ok with Hold Person being nerfed because it was so useful that it really crowded out other spell choices. Ideally, I think any real paralysis effect should be staved off for higher level spells, so that lower level spells can have more pick diversity. Maybe it won't manifest like that in...

D&D 5E (2024) Testing against the Gold Dragon

That's fine; most players don't seem to be optimal, even at level 20, in terms of playstyle at least, so this was realistic. Great work, thank you for this!

    D&D General Are You There D&D? It's Me, J.R.R. Tol-KEEEEN!

You think Sauron would have fooled the thri-kreen?

    D&D General Gnolls as Fiends

Baker is very much focused on worldbuilding that facilitates gameplay for MANY tables as opposed to one. He's a great content creator for that reason. A shame WotC refuses to tap him more; I honestly think if they let Keith spearhead his Eberron projects more freely, it would have been a popular...

I honestly thought it ending cut-off was part of the art.

    D&D General Are You There D&D? It's Me, J.R.R. Tol-KEEEEN!

You ever think what LotR would look like with thri-keen instead of hobbits?

The Rise And Fall Of Evil Genius Games

A much more succinct way of saying what I said haha. I agree man. I really hope he's able to switch to the former though. Takes about 10 years on average to work through personality disorders via therapy. Not too late for him!

The Rise And Fall Of Evil Genius Games

I will point out that narcissists are very weak-minded people. They are insecure. So when they are called out on their stuff, they do their best to hide it, because they are ashamed of themselves and what they've done but can't confront their own self, so they try to ignore it or discharge it...

The Rise And Fall Of Evil Genius Games

I'll note that it's gotten harder to produce RPGs physically since Covid. It's just flatout way more expensive to ship. Not as bad as mid-covid, but I think that led to some people's projects getting messed up and spiraling into bad practice.

    D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: The Planes

I think a lot of it is more tastes. I've played in great dungeons in my group. But most of my group are people who are into performative arts. They are more attracted to the model that WotC is adopting then, which to them better enables the kind of dramatic situations they want to get into.

D&D 5E (2024) Testing against the Gold Dragon

This is so much closer then I anticipated, and Loomas being banished might actually lead to a tpk depending on what happens the next few rounds. Good stuff so far.

D&D General DMing 5.5 in a week. What changes do I need to keep in mind? Any good houserules? Also, Dragonlance!

Also the power boost doesn't come to Level 5; you can play relatively normally the first 4 levels.

D&D General DMing 5.5 in a week. What changes do I need to keep in mind? Any good houserules? Also, Dragonlance!

Do 75% monster damage instead of average (50%), and free up multiattacks so that bespoke moves (like a breath weapon) can be used alongside normal attacks. Also, incorporate weapon masteries into your stat blocks that use weapons. Those three things will make your monsters feel a lot scarier and...

    Dragonbane general thread

The main reason for the new school approach is because it's a simpler game, and a lot of people only have time to play a simpler game. When I say simpler, I don't mean mechanics. I mean in what you're doing narratively. In 5R, I'm an Elf Paladin, there's a story goal of some sort (defeat...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

I think we have different schema for dungeon-crawling. I see cave-crawling as a variation within the same dungeon genre. For example, while Veins of the Earth presents a fabulous bespoke system for cave-crawling, that same system works just as good for dungeon crawling. But if you consider those...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

Shadowdark is fundamentally a different game where you're are modern-OSR-style nobodies going into a deathtrap situation and hopefully coming out alive. It's very much a survival horror + "challenge run" game as most OSR games are. But even these games don't actually need darkness to operate...
