D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

I guess the issue is one of language. It has gotten worse for you because it isn't to your tastes. We typically use the worse both subjectively for situations like this, and also objectively, and they have two different meanings. But people sometimes conflate these meanings, with the latter...

D&D 5E (2024) Anyone else dislike the "keyword" style language of 5.24?

I agree with your logic, but how you frame your perspective leaves me thinking that you really don't like 2024 edition and that your bias might be a bit too heavy to reliably judge whether keyword language is good or bad.

I'm saying some people believe their emotions are true to objective reality, and those people will argue that because the game is no longer appealing to their emotions that the game must therefore be getting worse.

You made a strange read of my comment. I'm saying that a lot of people feel this way, not everyone, and not the majority. I'm also not saying anything about criticism or being able to critique. I've obviously critiqued 2014 and 2024 editions up and down this forum. Don't try to deconstruct my...

D&D 5E (2024) Anyone else dislike the "keyword" style language of 5.24?

This logic is weak because as far as we know, 2024 has sold better than 2014. Ofc it hasn't been 10 years so who can say, but ??? And to pretend like 2014 wasn't written sloppily from the jump with melee attack, melee weapon attack, attack with a melee weapon all exist in 2014 and all mean...

D&D General Sandbox style: Rumors say a +1 sword is in a cave nearby. Go get it?

Yeah why not? Unless there are cooler plot hooks.

I think a lot of people say that they know that their feelings and tastes are just that, but that these people often believe their feelings and tastes are objectively correct. So I think people who aren't catered to by WotC anymore actually think that WotC is releasing low quality work and...

D&D 5E (2024) Anyone else dislike the "keyword" style language of 5.24?

As a college professor, my experience tells me that you have to handhold people to the nth degree, thus 5R and its use of keyterms is necessary and good.

Some forms of change you cant know are good or better until invested in. The idea that change for change's sake is "bad" completely misses the point of the conversation and indeed is a strawman,

Agreed 100%. Polar opposite of the more enlightened nusr attitude. It's a big bummer.

D&D 5E (2024) Is Combat Tedious on Purpose?

After lots of experimentation, I think having a system to shake up the combat every round or every so often keeps 5E from ever feeling tedious for me. Some examples: At the end of each round, a new element is introduced. The most impactful elements usually involve changing the battlefield or...

D&D General Matt Colville on the “Forever DM”

I like being the forever DM because I get to control the pace of the game, and I don't feel the pressure to come up with plans for game obstacles.

D&D 5E (2014) More DnD Beyond 3PP with monster hunting, harvesting, and more!

Crazy, if only DND Beyond updated its coding and support so that these products were properly serviced.

D&D General Why Combat is a Fail State - Blog and Thoughts

I'm someone who learned D&D largely through 5E. It has never made sense to me that people act like 5E is a game that enforces balanced encounters. Not in 2014, and def not in 2024. I have always, and in my wider gaming community this is the same, ran a mixture of encounters. Some are for...

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

No. It isn't fun, it doesn't add to the experience for me, and I find it slows down player turns. I like mechanics like Black Hack's usage die, but beyond that, I find the idea belongs in a genre of fun that I don't enjoy. I would be ok with something that was softer (like the usage die) such as...

    How would YOU change Shadowdark?

I wish instead of spending so much time being snarky, you would have explained why rolling to cast spells is bad. The thread you linked is 7 pages of people debating things with no clear consensus. Why can't you take the time to explain your point instead of assuming its objectively correct?

    How would YOU change Shadowdark?

Why is this ok in OSR, but when it's done in 5E, people say it's a flaw of the game -- despite the designers saying that this is the intent.
