    How would YOU change Shadowdark?

    I'd give characters flat HP that doesn't increase, but starts at a higher amount. I'd also make increasing stats be something auto done at certain levels or require training. Then I would replace those boring options on the class feature roll tables with something a lot more meaningful and cool.

    D&D 5E (2024) Mob Rules

    The values are updated and the table is cleaner and has more depth to it.

    D&D 5E (2024) Mob Rules

    I want to talk about what I think is the absolute best variant rule so far published for 5E and 5R: the 2024 DMG's Mob rules. I won't copy/paste them, but I will explain them here, then I'll explain why I like them. So, mobs are simple. You have a huge number of creatures but don't want to...

    D&D 5E (2024) Wargamer Takes Shot At WotC for Not Respecting Forgotten Realms Canon.

    Or a change for new aesthetics. I think some of the monster type changes are very interesting. I think the Purple Dragon changes are interesting. Not all ideas made in the past were great ideas, and its ok to work on, refine, and change ideas over the passage of time.

    D&D 5E (2024) Take A Deeper Look At The New D&D Starter Set's Card-Based Characters

    This kind of card-based stuff is just fantastic. Feels like they're learning from Daggerheart. Wish I could emulate this as a 3rd Party.

    D&D 5E (2024) Wargamer Takes Shot At WotC for Not Respecting Forgotten Realms Canon.

    This is exactly how I feel. The old Purple Dragon Knights were a mid idea. Not bad, not good, just mid. I'm sure they had their fans, but it was pretty much just purple knights. Ok. Now they get sick amethyst dragons and a sense of purpose and agency in the world and sick purple dragons. But...

    D&D General The Logistics of High Level Play. TSR to 5.5

    I think the game should one day switch from Level to Tier play. You have 4 or 5 tiers, and powers in lower tiers are designed to largely only be useful at their power level and are swapped out for new powers or updated mechanics at higher levels. One big thing I think causes issues at higher...

    D&D General Why Combat is a Fail State - Blog and Thoughts

    Dude I'm so glad someone finally says it. I love the OSR, I think there's a lot of good there, but some of the ideas have led to IMO very bad sessions at my tables, both run by me or played in by me. This is the biggest one. Some monsters are avoided because they are traps in monster form, like...

    D&D General Simple, Gritty,Modern. Unpopular Opinions

    Working on a Bronze Age fork of 5E now. Playtest it for me when it's playtestable.

    D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

    Strong recommend from me. Absolutely beautiful novel. Has a very haunting supernatural moment in it about halfway through. Other then that and the beginning, the book is more alt China then historical fantasy, but it bangs.

    Under Heaven is such an amazing book.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Psion+++++thread

    Yep I agree. I just finished creating my own Mystic class today, as part of a 5R spinoff focusing on the Bronze Age I'm working on. Mysticism and Science-as-Magic are both IMO at the core of original psionics, and if you update these ideas to the aesthetics of TODAY, you get something very much...

    D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

    I hope you read all this! I think the Bard, Cleric, Druid, Warlock, are all perfect where they're at in terms of capabilities. Bards have a good support and condition list with little damage involved. Very much trickster magic. Clerics have the most healing, as well as a number of support...

    D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

    Which is good, and I'm proud to be part of that zeitgeist, it just perplexes it that its an opinion that held for so long. Animanga has been this popular since the mid 2010s. I guess it's a cultural divide between Gen X and younger generations though, especially since Gen X directly inspired...

    D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

    One of the weirdest oversights in contemporary RPGs is the weird reluctance to turn to Animanga for inspiration. One Piece is currently the one of best selling "book series" of all time, behind Harry Potter, and is the best selling comic of all time. Dragon Ball is so popular that during the...

    D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

    Are we talking Magic and not Spells? Then it should have no limits and should be continually sprinkled on all classes.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Psion+++++thread

    I also want to say, I don't think it necessarily matters that a lot of people have a different opinion on what the Psion should look like mechanically. Quite frankly, this applies to every class. The only thing that matters if 5E choosing a direction that works for the game and applying it...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Psion+++++thread

    Laserllama is my #1 favorite content creator so I'm well aware. I love his Psion. Personally, I feel if 5.R used Laserllama materials, it would have been a roaring success. His original classes are also fantastic. The Magus, the Psion, the Shaman, the Shaper -- Laserllama literally designs the...
