D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

I suspect that the actions and results of this campaign will not be a very useful point of comparison or warning to 99% of the other tables out there. As for instance, just because the rules do not prohibit the wearing of 10 rings of resistance by each PC (resulting in like 50 odd rings of...

D&D General Anyone else notice this?

"Look, if I argue with you... I must take up a contrary position." "Yes, but that isn't just saying 'No, it isn't'." "Yes, it is." "NO, IT ISN'T!"

D&D 5E (2014) So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

There is no difference between magic items and class features-- they are both just nothing more than additional game mechanics a player has at their disposal for their PC to use against the enemies the DM places in front of them. So whether or not one's game works better or worse with magic...

D&D 5E (2024) Above the Table Interview with Jeremy Crawford.

Yeah, it's almost like Dungeons and Dragons as a game has been constantly evolving over its 50+ years of existence and that useful ideas can come from anywhere within its history. And that people who play it can find those bits and adapt them to their game at any point-- that they don't need to...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

Then feel free to get your answer from someone else. You aren't required to listen to me. I'm fine with it. But you do have to accept that the answer isn't coming from Wizards of the Coast (as of yet) because the book has already been printed and the rules aren't in it. Plenty of other books...

Then change it. You can give as little or as much as you like.

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

Or more unneccesary, depending on how you look at it. If you are the DM you can just give whatever XP you want. We do it all the time for finishing quests and the like. So what difference does it make how much XP one gives for some random monster they make up?

D&D 5E (2024) Is Oath of the Noble Genie Green, Yellow, or Red?

Voted Red. Bad narrative in my opinion. Paladins Oaths are not sworn to individuals and gain power from them... that's what Warlocks do. And what we already have in the Genie Patron. Paladins have ideals and their uttermost conviction and belief in those ideals give them their abilities...

D&D 5E (2014) So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

You know, you could always just not read their posts or put them on Ignore. If you're going to completely stop reading EN World because of one person... that pretty much is an indicator you don't actually want to hang out here at all regardless of what that one poster writes. So they have no...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

Choose one. It's gonna be between a +2 and +6 so just choose one to use. Or look at some other monsters that have basically the same amount of power you are making and copy that. It doesn't really matter. Your players are not going to care what the monster's attack bonus is, nor how that...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

If it really matters that much, find a monster close to what you just made, see what they give as XP, and then give your monster that. I mean unless you are designing these monsters to be published... then anything you do for your home campaign does not need some sort of precision of any sort...

D&D 5E (2014) So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

For me, all the editions feel like D&D to me... so trying to pair them up for similarity doesn't seem necessary.

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

Hey... you start it by calling my take cheap apologia... I'll call your take lazy.

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

Learning how to DM without just lazily following charts and expecting everything to work out is anti-DM? Interesting take.

D&D General Chris Perkins and Stan! - previous D&D edition thoughts

And beside which... all 5E has to do is be more than 2E as compared to AD&D, 3E and 4E, LOL! No one is saying 5E and 2E are mirrors of each other... all that is being said is that 5E and 2E are more alike than 5E and the other editions. The two might only have 15% in common with each other...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

You don't. You learn how the games works such that you don't need some artificial rating to point to. You know what your players and their characters can do. You in theory have been making encounters for them for weeks / months / years over all manner of campaigns. Just make a monster that...
  17. DEFCON 1

D&D General Chris Perkins and Stan! - previous D&D edition thoughts

So because you can pick out two of the hundreds of thousands of different aspects of both games that don't align... then neither game aligns at all? Interesting take. :D

    D&D 5E (2024) Githzerai Psion? Thri-kreen Psion? Where's My Psion?

You make an Aberrant Mind Sorcerer and cross out 'Charisma' under the Spellcasting Ability heading and write in 'Intelligence'. And then wherever you see the words 'Far Realm' in any of the fluff that you write down in your background or spells or whatnot... you come up with whatever other...
