    Is it time for 5E?

That's why they needed pages and pages to describe how Rangers party. (In essence, it involves a warren of little honeycombed rooms, each big enough for three rangers at a time, the details are where things get more complicated). Also, are the huge number of polearms in 1E and 2E being touted...

What kind of print products would want WotC to produce?

I want flavor-heavy books along the lines of Draconomicon, Open Grave, Manual of the Planes, Planes Above/Below, etc. etc. I particularly think there's room for a detailed treatment of the Feywild and the Archfey. It's a new part of the game, and hasn't been fleshed out in any previous...

If WoTC were to give up on making DnD RPGs..

"Pipe dream" doesn't come close. Under those circumstances, it would be more likely for WotC to give everybody a free unicorn for Christmas. If D&D was in such bad shape that WotC gave up on it, WotC wouldn't spend the time or money to "kill off the GSL and make 4E OGL."

    Traps and Hazards Tools/Material

In the past I've used the article Trapped! in the August 2008 issue of Dragon to homecook my own traps. I don't have any idea if the suggested DC's and damage amounts are up to date with the current design standards. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/dragon/366/366_Trapped.pdf Kobold Quaterly...

    Hero Builder’s Handbook??

Sure it's dead, but what was it? If it was going to be an awesome book of awesome awesomeness, then I'm pissed it was canceled. If it was going to be a sucky book of sucking suckyness, then I'm glad it's gone. The other two books that were pulled, we mostly know what they were going to be...

What if WotC just said "That's it."

To quibble with the hypothetical, I don't believe a company can "write adventures and sell rulebooks" without making some revisions to the rules as it does so. There's a pretty long tradition of D&D adventures containing new rules. But if it happened somehow, I'd keep playing what I'm playing...

I am beginning to appreciate some of the design decisions of 4E.

Oh hell yeah. My high level party was heavy on fighty classes and light on magicky classes (1 Rogue, 1 Ranger, 1 Paladin, 1 Fighter, 1 Cleric with 4 levels of Fighter, 1 Sorcerer). Above 15th level it was very, very common for either the Ranger or the Fighter to dish out 100+ points of damage...

I am beginning to appreciate some of the design decisions of 4E.

I Dm'd 3.5 up to 20th level, and I routinely spent 1 to 2 hours statting up NPC's. I'd say there were basically three big time sinks for me. 1. Adding templates and class levels to existing monsters. I did this by hand, and there always seemed to be a lot of redundancy to it. Frex, Add the...

D&D 4E Perspective: 4E as one of "Ten most necessary remakes"

Nobody should be happy to be on a top ten list that kicks off with Burton's Planet of the Apes remake.

    Intelligent Apes

I am 90% certain the Hadozee started out as a Spelljammer thing. that doesn't make them less goofy, but it explains why they're so goofy.

    D&D 4E Elevation Bonus in 4E?

Given 4E's emphasis on tactical positioning in combat, I'm surprised, but Hayek is right. There is no official bonus for having the high ground in 4E.

Help me come up with the cost of an Inn.

Use the treasure parcel system. Assign the Inn a level. For example, a crummy hostel in a tiny village is a Level 1 Inn. A resort hotel in Sigil is a Level 30 Inn. I'd call a modest place in Overlook a Level 5 Inn, but it's up to you. Then say that the Inn generates profit equal to the...

Maybe I don't understand the problem...

Three simple rules, applicable in all situations, that make everything better. 1. Work Fast. 2. Change Speeds. 3. Throw Strikes. To OP: Most "problems" that I see being bandied about online are entirely subjective opinions presented as objective truth. It is completely appropriate to ignore them.

    Is it time for 5E?

I'm not so certain. We know that developing a new edition involves a pretty hefty upfront investment in time and money. Estimates in this thread are that it takes +/- 3 years of in-house development to get a new edition off the ground. I presume a hypothetical 5E would also need online tools...

    Is it time for 5E?

I predict that WotC never releases a product called "Fifth Edition". Instead, I predict WotC will do one of the two following things: 1. Elaborate on the underlying framework of 4E with products similar to Essentials. A combination of errata, rules revisions and new splats gradually changes...

Can someone explain to me what 'Christmas Tree effect' means?

Part of the challenge when talking about this issue pre-3E is that TSR didn't really provide a guideline for expected wealth-by-level or gear-by-level. There was a general admonition not to be Monty Haul, but no clear explanation of how much magic was too much. It's clear to me that different...

Nearing 100000 members - How did you find En World?

I googled "Froghemoth" and got a link here. Thanks Froghemoth!

I hate reach and attacks of opportunity (old thread)

And being prone is devastating for melee-focused characters in 3.X 1) -4 to melee attack rolls. 2) -4 to AC against opponents' melee attack rolls. 3) A crawling character moves 5 feet as a move action. In short, your offense is gorked, your defense is gorked and you can't move.

    Is D&D (WotC) flaming out?

My group converted their 2E characters to 3.0 a few months after the new edition came out. The biggest change that I noted was that many of the PC's got a power up because they had ability scores in the 14-16 range that gave them effectively no benefit in 2E but had greater benefit in 3E.

how much to tell players about areas before rolling?

Pick three interesting details about each of your 15 places of interest. When the PC's arrive at that place, tell them those three details. Example: A ruined tower 1. This place was built by Clerics of Ioun. 2. It was burned down by Orcs a long time ago. 3. Its basement used to contain...
