D&D is not a supers game.

If no one responds to edition-war posts, then the thread can get back on track. EDIT: Original post was simply too mean-spirited.

D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

My AD&D players did that sort of thing all the time.

    Familiars

Isn't a non-magical familiar called "a pet"? A special rule or ritual is needed for pets?

D&D is not a supers game.

A common nickname for that first 4e adventure was "Keep on the TPK-Fell." The first time I ran it, my group had a TPK. The difference I saw compared to early editions was a TPK in 4e came about after 4-5 rounds of combat (which took an hour!). In AD&D, a TPK could come about from a single...

D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

The games I ran throughout middle school and high school were just like that, "greyhawking". Many of the early published adventures fostered that style of play, as did traditional dungeon crawls. It can be quite fun, and leveling ends up being pretty fast. In later editions, xp for gp went away.

D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

I recall how some of my AD&D games had players carefully taking every last possibly valuable item from a defeated enemy's stronghold. Also, adventures that were supposed to be about a mystery, a rescue, etc., became about securing loot.

Should there be special rules for subduing dragons?

In the old rules, the dragon didn't just surrender, it became your henchman, essentially.

Should there be special rules for subduing dragons?

Until I was about 15 or so, I thought it was cool. Then, I thought, if dragons are intelligent, often spellcasters, sometimes geniuses, why would they be subdued? Also, why couldn't other creatures be subdued? Why do dragons have this vulnerability, but not other creatures? Why would the dragon...

    How should humans be human?

I suspect the human ability bonuses are just a stand-in for something else during this playtest.

D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

AD&D wasn't consistent about gold for xp. There was already a note about the DM awarding xp:gp at 1:1, 1:2, or even 1:10 ratio, based on difficulty. Also-- 1. No systematic xp for traps, but some official adventures awarded trap/puzzle xp 2. No systematic xp for quests/story awards, but some...

    Alternatives to At-Will Magic

I love at-will magic, especially minor effects like mage hand and light. I do not like MM as an at-will. Something about an auto-hit at will rubs me the wrong way. I would prefer at-will attacks with a damage type and a hit roll, and make MM better, and a 1st level spell. Easy to house rule.

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

For everyone that hates damage on a "miss", Reaper's text need only be changed: "When the die would indicate a miss, the character with Reaping Strike lands a glancing blow that inflicts minor damage." Take that! Willing Suspension of Disbelief!

Kobolds Are Supposed To Be Pathetic Combatants

Yep. Perhaps the feat should be reworded, something like, "If the die roll would indicate a miss, you instead score a glancing blow." Ta-dah!

Playtest report - can 22 goblins defeat alcohol?

I think the strange Intoxicated condition will go away or be changed with the next rules test. The current version is kinda silly.

Lists of what I am not allowing will be passed around the room.

This is the same as in every game I have run since 1982. Anyway, DDN won't actually be out for over a year.

    [Houserule] Longer healing times

My solution would be to redefine what long and short rests are like. Others have suggested similar changes. For instance, if short rests are raised to 30 min, or an hour, then they become harder for the adventuring party to take. This would mean fewer rests between encounters. If a long rest...

I don't understand Gridless combat. HELP!

I started DMing in 1982, and I did no-grid, small hand-drawn maps, minis with no grid, and grid (using minis and chessboards, 10' squares). Use whatever system you and your players like best, and feel free to mix and match.

LONG REST: let's add some realism.

Spell recovery is always arbitrary, though. If spells were only based on concentration and study, then why not have unlimited casting? Likewise, whose to say a spell might not take a week to memorize after every casting? The answer: gameplay. The idea isn't to simulate something about the...

The Caves of Chaos: Not very good?

I would like to see a playtest with one of the best mid-level modules around, Pharoah. The adventure includes desert wilderness, traps and tricks, undead, and some possibility for interaction encounters. It was originally for levels 5-7. I hope that DDN doesn't make the mistake of focusing...

The Caves of Chaos: Not very good?

I didn't think Keep on the Borderlands was a good adventure back in the 1980s, and I still don't think so today. Sorry.
