    Falling from Great Heights

If you are "hit" by the charging knight with a lance, what happens depend on your hit point total: 1. If it kills you, you were skewered right through internal organs. 2. If you are left with a few hit points, it was a solid hit, but it didn't kill you. 3. If you are left with more than a few...

Super D&D: We don't need any stinkin' reality!

A lot of folks do want that, though.

    AD&D 1E Should 5e adopt 1e style arcane magic?

I am just glad that 5e seems to be taking a middle ground: *Vancian system for better spells *At-wills/powers system for simple attacks As soon as reserve feats made it into the 3.5 campaign I played in, they were almost universally taken by casters.

    April 3rd, Rule of 3

In AD&D, the higher level PCs in my game routinely carried around bags of healing potions. Though many campaigns didn't use item creation rules, AD&D had them; potions could be made starting at level 7, scrolls even earlier, and wands at level 11. Casters in my games routinely made potions...

Poll: Type of Campaign You Play

I was a regular player from age 10-13. By age 13, I primarily DMed games. I ran a mix of single adventures and campaigns that lasted a few months. By age 16, I began a campaign that lasted about two years. I DMed nearly the whole time, with occasional breaks playing Marvel Super Heroes. In...

Monte on Life and Death (And Resurrection)

Multiple characters is a play style thing. My players generally dislike multiple characters, and they aren't fans of having a group of NPC henchmen/hirelings, either. In some games, it's great, especially when there is less roleplay, a pickup group or tournament, and so forth. As for 5e raise...

    April 3rd, Rule of 3

Lots of us don't want to play a video-game style game. Third edition, did this, by the way. I wasn't a fan.

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

I also thought Pemerton's most recent post, above, was excellent--I too am out of xp.

Feat points for getting feats instead of fixed feat slots at levels?

Of course, one could also mandate that no feats are awesome, too. Cut the bottom 25% and the top 25%.

    April 3rd, Rule of 3

Wowzers. Considering some of the negative commentary by Mearls and Monte about 4e, I am surprised to find that so many things from 4e might be part of 5e.

    Poll: Starting Point for Campaigns

I usually start at low level or level 1, but I've been happy with games I started at mid or even high-level. It's strange that in all editions I have played, high level monsters/items/spells/class abilities just didn't get used. It makes me a little sad, to be honest. Sometimes, my gaming...

Poll: Type of Campaign You Play

Then, Tortoise, you would squarely be in the "other" camp. :) My cutoff time frames for each category were arbitrary. Still, the combination of the poll and comments did seem to produce the result that 12-18 month campaigns are common here on EN World.

Legends and Lore April 2, 2012

It's weird, though, and I never liked it. Some campaign settings don't stat out NPCs like that (my preference), and in 4e, it simply wasn't needed. I guess I would like to see becoming a ruler completely decoupled from a particular level range. I think having guidelines in a module is a great...

    Generic classes and modularity

I loved the generic class idea . . . but my players never went with it. A lot of people like picking a class that is already "built". It's a weakness of D&D, but also a great strength. I hope that 5e does present some options like the 3.5 Unearthed Arcana, though.

D&D 4E 4E combat and powers: How to keep the baby and not the bathwater?

More edition warring. It's getting tiresome. Isn't this thread about which aspects of 4e combat might be kept for the new edition?

Legends and Lore April 2, 2012

The king is likely double-digit level? Is the king even likely to have been an adventurer? In games that resemble medieval Europe or Asia, there is a good chance the king has never seen close combat, and has the title due to heredity or politics. Likewise, an adventuring mercenary, especially...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Sense of Wonder in 5E

Of course, Burning Wheel gives players a lot of narrative control, too. If the player passes that test, then indeed, there is something of the sort he was looking for. In such a game, details are determined largely as needed. In D&D, it's nearly always the opposite--fluff can be determined on...

Poll: Type of Campaign You Play

Poll: Type of Campaign You Play

Sorry about the limiting nature of the poll, but with the small sample set generated on EN World, a poll with highly divided responses isn't likely to show a trend other than "people play different ways." If you play in many types of games/campaigns, then you are in the "Other" category. I...
