    Weaker 1st level characters

Some easy ways to tone down level 1 characters: * Remove specialties until a higher level, as mentioned above. * Give half hit dice in hit points at level one, instead of max (d10 starts with 5 hp, d6 starts with 3 hp, etc) * Use both healing limitations in the playtest notes: no automatic...

Jack of all Trades & Survivor

Other simple Specialties: Lucky: +1 on all saves (or maybe advantage on saves, etc) Prodigy: additional +1 to an ability score of your choice

    DDN Alignment Sidebar

To be fair, the alignment sidebar, with the 9 alignment system, plus Unaligned, is better than nothing.

    DDN Alignment Sidebar

Still, the "Unaligned" alignment is listed as instincts, referencing creatures and animals. The Neutral alignment is the "preserver of balance". I just hope the final iteration of the game provides for Unaligned characters, who behave as everyday people, rather than "on instinct". It's also...

    DDN Alignment Sidebar

The alignment sidebar on p. of the Character Creation packet briefly describes the 9 alignment system. Fair enough. Still, the description of Chaotic Good is essentially the same as the old "unaligned" alignment in 4e: do as your conscience dictates, without worrying what others think. That's...

TSR/WotC Adventures - Are they REALLY any good? (Warning: Possible Spoilers)

My players didn't play Ravenloft as a gothic horror story. Instead, they played as experienced hack'n slash, dungeoncrawlers. After one encounter with Strahd and realizing he was a vampire, they laid an elaborate trap for him, lured him to fight, killed him in one combat round, and then trapped...

TSR/WotC Adventures - Are they REALLY any good? (Warning: Possible Spoilers)

Though classics, the G series of modules wasn't very good, IMHO. They are just a lot of big fights the PCs slog through, with way too much treasure provided. Also, some of the most detailed and interesting parts of the adventures are likely to be missed/skipped by the party.

    4 groups of D&D fans, not 3

I know a few people who came into D&D that way, too (video games first). To elaborate, successful rpg video games sometimes spawn ttrpgs. Dedicated fans want more, and ttrpgs can provide more. Unfortunately, the debacle of Bioware/Atari/Obsidian with Neverwinter Nights and the legal problems...

Which groups of fans are worth going after?

I knew there was some behind the scenes problems, but I had no idea about this. Very sad.

TSR/WotC Adventures - Are they REALLY any good? (Warning: Possible Spoilers)

One of the mis-steps of 4e was a lousy starting adventure. *way too likely to TPK at several points *could have been fun sandbox, but was a linear series of locations *too much uninteresting combat (though the set pieces were cool) I agree that a new edition should be launched with a...

TSR/WotC Adventures - Are they REALLY any good? (Warning: Possible Spoilers)

As others said, the Desert of Desolation is among my favorites in D&D history. Well-written, interesting story, lots of fun, lots of puzzles/traps, even meaningful rp. I also really liked the 3.0 Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil . . . except that I had to add my own timeline, and allow...

    The Constitution based Character

I would like a "toughguy" version of the fighter that relied on Con/defense/survival more than weapons and offense.

Why not combine the Fighter and Monk Classes?

I love the "mystical baggage" of the monk. I could see trying to rework the monk so it could have a wider range of archetypes: wuxia, shamanistic, religious fighting order, etc.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e/Next Cosmology

That makes it even worse, since then it isn't even clever, but only derivative.

Yes! Those are the comparisons that concern me, too.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e/Next Cosmology

One thing I absolutely hated about Planescape was the half-assed cockney rhyming slang ripped off to use in Sigil. It would similar to a British company making a fantastic world where Bronx slang was used. That was totally "barmy".

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e/Next Cosmology

I like the 1e cosmology the most. The Great Wheel is based on it, but I prefer the original. The 1e Manual of the Planes was one of my favorite books, constantly giving me ideas for stories and adventures.

    D&D 5E (2014) PDFs and Next

I don't want just a PDF: I want an interactive, customizable digital book. The new wave of school textbooks are like this. If it's gonna be digital, it should be functional.
