Forked Thread: DMs - No one cares how long you worked (was: Rant -- GM Control...)

I would agree entirely with this. However, there still leaves the problem of what to do if one person is not on board. If everyone else finds the game enjoyable do we quit and do something else because one person doesn't? What if someone new joins the game at a later date and does not like the...

Rant -- GM Control, Taking it Too Far?

This may be where the DM is having a problem - I would be too. Often times the silly names and puns are fun the first time you do it. After it has happened a number of times, then silly can, and often times does, move into just being annoying. Just a thought.

Sleeping City of the Old Ones; a 4E sandbox. Opinions please!

Quite interesting. I have been attempting to do something similar for my 3.5 game. In my case, it is a city lost to the jungles. Imagine an Indiana Jones type character discovering a lost Incan or Aztecan city. Lots of ancient traps, strange creatures, and more treasure than anyone can imagine...

    Highest level you've played

    2e - 3rd level 3e - 14th level in a campaign; 40th level in a one-shot 4e - 1st level

Why do we have such different experiences?

Really? None? What if the creature (troll) has only ever encountered bugbears - and in those encounters he has learned that once you have hit them all they run away. Why would that not be a justifiable tactic against the adventurers? What if that same creature were backed into a corner? Would...

    Conceptualize the Paladin

This. I prefer my Paladins to be the highest example of Chivalry, Decency, Justness, etc. - the typical knight-in-shining-armor of Western literature.

Why do we have such different experiences?

I think there is something to be said for how we play monsters in battle. When I write up encounters I will decide what the monsters role (not 4e sense) in the battle is. For example, I may write up an encounter with a couple of Hill Giants. Their role in combat is to be rampaging monsters -...

    4e: A work in progress?

Almost certainly, however, I feel that it would have been better for the games long-term health to have a pantheon unique to 4e core - whatever that ends up being. Those deities you stated come with a lot of history (baggage?) about who they are and what they meant in their original pantheons...

    4e: A work in progress?

I am not talking about the number of deities but the composition of such. I think they would have been better served bringing an entirely new pantheon into the base setting rather than an amalgamation of Greyhawk, Realms, and other setting's deities. They had an opportunity to create something...

    4e: A work in progress?

This. As far as mechanics go. I do feel that a lot of the fluff (alignment and deities in particular) were not very well thought out.

Why do we have such different experiences?

In addition to what has been said, and I agree with a lot of it, I would like to add... The game table you play on. Do you play on a square or hex mat or neither? Do your games occur primarily in two dimensions or three? I have found that when I was using just a battle-mat or dungeon tiles to...

    Wrong facts about D&D3 combat?

We can generally do a round of combat in about 5-8 minutes. Most of us are quick with numbers and pay attention to the game-state. Plus, we use cheat sheets and often will roll dice ahead of time to keep the combat moving along. This is with 6-7 PCs and a DM running multiple monsters. I think...

Hit Points & Healing Surges Finally Explained!

I am curious about how people describe combat occurring. In my home games combat generally goes: Fighter: I attack the orc. Does a sixteen hit? DM: Yes. Fighter: Ok, eight damage. DM: The orc attacks you. Natural twenty, chance for critical. Does an eighteen confirm? Fighter: Yes. DM: Alright...

    What's Wrong with the Railroad?

In fifteen years of DMing I have never once had to say "no" to my players going off in their own direction. I am able to do this because, in addition to my prepared adventure, I keep a second notebook with me that contains numerous encounters, locations, and NPCs. If the PCs go in a direction...

    Status of D&D Game Table?

Hah! I must be loosing my memory because I do not remember those posts in this thread. Thanks for reminding me. I will check them out. Hopefully the quality is good enough!

    Status of D&D Game Table?

Which ones are you referring to? I am not very familiar with anything outside of what WotC does.

    Status of D&D Game Table?

Actually, for me, 4E cannot be played without the game table up and running. The main reason I had bought into 4E when announced was being able run games online with friends around the country. My local gaming group prefers 3.5E. The longer it takes for this feature to come online the less...

Where is 4E incomplete? Forked: Does 4E have staying power?

True. The game does not fall apart due to the lack of these classes. However, there is a perception problem with these classes missing. When you remove something that has become a standard part of the game, even if you replace it with something else, there is going to be a perceived loss of...

    layoffs?

Best wishes to those who have lost their jobs. Given the current economic downturn and the names let go by WotC - this looks to be a purely bottom line decision. And that is sad because they are loosing A LOT of talent.
