Forked Thread: ... with an interesting note about 4th edition

As a Hasbro shareholder this would be the worst* thing I would want to hear WotC say. Given the amount of hours involved and money spent to bring this edition to market they should certainly hope and want 4E to sell well. That being said - we are in a recession and that, I believe, is having a...

Was there a real need for a fourth ed.? Or would tweaking 3.5 have done it for you?

I think that the designers reached a point with the game where their creativity was being limited by a lot of the base rules of 3.5. They needed to clean up the base rules set and open up design space. That said - As a player and DM - I think that it has come a couple of years too early for...

I'm sorry, your character idea is too awful.

Isn't this just a new take on Robert Lewis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? To me, that is one of the classics concepts of a modern horror style game. If the character is done right it should fit perfectly well into what you are describing your game as. Maybe this - The sister character is...

I'm sorry, your character idea is too awful.

This would get a big "no" at my table. I mean a dragonborn paladin is just too weird. :hmm: Now, these two are pretty cool and I would have zero problems with. I may have to steal the communist idea for a future character. It comes down to does the character concept fit the game world...

What do you want WOTC to release as the next 4e campaign setting?

I voted Greyhawk but would be just as happy with Ravenloft. I think either Ravenloft or Dark Sun would make the most sense to be released next. The feel of those two settings would be different enough from what is already on the market.

Forked Thread: PC concept limitations in 4e

Part of the problem comes from accepting what certain terms mean. Take the Ranger for example - is it a term for a suite of powers and abilities or is it a term for someone who hunts the edges of civilization*? Or both? The question is do you accept classes implying a certain flavor or not? If...

What do you want? (Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's target audience?)

I would like WotC to pack up Herremann the Wise and sell him as DnD because everything he wrote is exactly what I want.

Non-combat roles in 4E (Was Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's target...)

How about these for three roles? Craftsman - People who create Performers - People who entertain Professionals - People who provide services

Where 3E and 4E players stand in the great 3E disputes

Not a fan. Psionics act too much like magic. I haven't used it yet as a PC. I don't disallow* my players from using it as a DM. * I love the double negatives! No. I have always enjoyed playing the fighter and have always found it necessary to have one* in the party. * Of course a Paladin...

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

Maybe the bird in hand is nothing more than a prairie chicken while the two in the bush sound a lot like turkeys! Turkeys are bigger and maybe more tasty than a prairie chicken. My WotC purchases stopped with the first three 4E books. Until they produce either Greyhawk or Ravenloft in 4E that...

    Heroic/Paragon/Epic - How Famous?

It really depends on the campaign setting and style of game. But, the general guidelines I use are (regardless of edition) - Low-Levels/Heroic - Start out as virtual unknowns that become local heroes. Mid-Levels/Paragon - Their tales have begun to spread to neighboring areas. Bards may take...

Is the economic crisis affecting your gaming purchasing?

I said slightly. I have been cutting back since the beginning of the year mostly due to how much I spent last year on games. That, coupled with the fact that there is nothing coming out that really interests me. Although, MtG's new set looks pretty sweet!

    Characters first or World first?

Yes, and yes. The good thing about building a game like this is that it lets the DM know where you want to go and what you are interested in. He can then build a world that contains those elements. Hopefully, resulting in an experience you all can enjoy. The downside, of course, is the ideas...

Let The Players Manage Themselves Part 3, waitaminute...

I have never seen an early era Dragon Magazine so I cannot comment on whether or not I would have liked it - I started playing during 2E. From the very beginning our goal was to emulate the feel we got when we read LotRs. We delved into creating interesting characters, mighty empires, their...

Let The Players Manage Themselves Part 3, waitaminute...

Ah, and now we have an understanding. Had you wrote that in the article it would have come across much more clear to me. And I am sure to many others here on these boards. :p Thank you for clearing that up.

    How Long Is YOUR Campaign?

I have a 2E game that started in 1994 or thereabouts. We played fairly regularly until 2001. And maybe a couple times each year since. I have only had one 2E character in that entire time. Malcolm share rule all - eventually! I have a 3E game that started in early 2005 and is still going...

Let The Players Manage Themselves Part 3, waitaminute...

I agree. The previous two parts and most of this article where very good advice. It looked at a number of problems a lot of DMs face and gave us a solution. The solutions given never felt like they were musts but instead felt like options. The comment about world-building, however, seemed...

Let The Players Manage Themselves Part 3, waitaminute...

For me, I cannot experience the joys of success without also being able to experience complete and utter failure. I want to know the thrill of having everything I have done hang in balance due to a bad roll of the dice. I want to know the thrill of that moment just before you roll a save knowing...

Let The Players Manage Themselves Part 3, waitaminute...

I enjoy large sandbox style games where the players are placed in a world and they follow their whims to wherever. I want to be able to look back and say "Do you remember when..." For us, that comes through watching the characters interact with the world I created in unexpected or unintended...

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

This about sums it up for me and my group. That and the discovery of HeroForge/MonsterForge made 3.5 so much easier to DM again.
