5 Lessons for DMs from the LOST Series Bible

Absolutely, a congealing process. I think it also helps with RL-based player churn, because if some players leave the game for whatever reason (or if there is ever a TPK),new players/characters are not required to follow the same narrative (in the gameworld reality the demon cult is still...

5 Lessons for DMs from the LOST Series Bible

Inconsistencies... Yes, if you are in "the making it up as you go along" approach -- which I am -- you DO have to take into account what has been decided/revealed/generated over the course of play. Which does mean certain decisions DO have to be made along the way, it's just that you don't have...

5 Lessons for DMs from the LOST Series Bible

I really believe in number 5. You got to make allowance for the spontaneity of play and the wonders of ingame creation. I think that makes the medium rather different from a TV show that loses its way.

    Babies ate my gaming group

This is where cool meets cute. Awesome.

    Babies ate my gaming group

Some really good friends had twins years ago, so what my brother did (he was the DM) was set up the game at their house. It was fun rolling dice with two years burbling around. Eventually they got sent to bed and the adults would play until the glorious hour of midnight. Turned out that mum and...

    Babies ate my gaming group

My 5 person group is all adults, ranging from early 20's to mid 40's, one with a kid. We all have jobs, school, relationships, outside interests, stuff. We play 4 hours every two weeks, and find the best date available in advance. Come gametime, somebody usually has to drop out that day because...

What the Heck is Fractal Adventure Design?

This just sounds like good old sandboxing to me. Asking a bunch of "what if"questions (ahead of time and during the course of play) is a good, simple, process and a lot of people could benefit from adapting it.

Have you tried this patron romance idea? How did it work?

So 3 NPCs are rivals for another NPCs affections? It seems fine, but with 3 rival suitors -* all seeking to involve the party * - it seems like a lot of work for not much payoff, unless the players get invested in the situation, by choosing to back one patron no matter what, or by manipulating...

What's your favourite version or variation of D&D?

BFRPG. Lots of options, easy to house rule, easy to expand. Free and well-written. Suitable for new gamers and old hands.

Guiding players to more sandbox-y play?

Yeah this, my sandbox is rich with story, story being whatever the players decide to do. And in that context, there's always NPCs with agendas, unfolding current events, and dynamic politics between the powers that be. Nothing happens in a vacuum. A lot of my prep between sessions is not...

Big changes a'coming! Merging the D&D forums

Don't like. In my opinion, we already have a general forum, so we don't need a second general (D&D) forum. Rather than cross-pollination, I think you're just going to see more weeds and the hardworking mods are going to be extra busier as gardeners. eh. I'm sure I'll survive. But if traffic...

    Optimal number of players?

Last year I got to run a group of six players, which I had never done before. It went great. Right now my sweet spot is 4-6.

    Just need 20 more xp!

In the game I run, I track all XP. Players know generally but not specifically how many XP they have. For gameplay/time reasons, I prefer to do level ups between pr before sessions, and not during sessions. If a character winds up being very close to breaking a level at the end of the night...

    Why do you GM?

I like the world building and I enjoy shepherding the emergent stories that come up during play. There's a whole art to the process, which I find personally very rewarding. I like playing, but I like GM-ing more.

What reasons do people in your groups give for not wanting to GM?

It rarely comes up. I like to DM and I put on a good show, so none of my players mind at all. If I want to play, I find another group. There are many out there. One player I know, who is IMO a capable GM, simply dislikes the prepwork.

    The army behind the army

To spare you some (probabaly enjoyable) historical research, I'd recommend tracking down the old Dragon Magazine article "An Army Travels on its Stomach".

I'm Sick Of...(D&D tropes that you can do without)

Monsters also eat each other. People are pinkier and tastier. Leaner. Very Heart Healthy. But many monsters will eat almost anything.

    REAL Old Grognards: Need Help!

It's OK. A lot of people don't remember the 60's that clearly.

    RPGs and mental health issues

    I'm an unreliable player, HELP!

I think you should honour your commitments, whatever they may be. It may be that you'll have to figure out which commitments take precedence. In a game context, most games are OK with players missing sessions. Life happens. However, if its an ongoing pattern, especially last minute...
