OSR Old school wizards, how do you play level 1?

You’ve cast your single spell for the day and combat breaks out again. How do you spend your turns?

D&D General Alternatives to spell slots and spell points

Yeah. My proposed system gives you two spell casts before you make a check, and a way to recharge on a short rest. So I think it will be ok. I didn't want the magicians spamming cantrips in my system - spells are meant to be pretty cool. The magicians have handguns if they run out of spells

D&D General Alternatives to spell slots and spell points

I liked the idea of a ritual for recovery, but you are right that it might make recovery too hand wavy. It really depends on the DM. The one-shot scenario I'm using this for has a bit of time pressure, so it's probably ok. At the very least, I might say you can only recover your equilibrium...

D&D General Alternatives to spell slots and spell points

It's a Black Hack variant. The spells are level-less (at this stage) and the stat numbers would scale with your level. I think you would top out at about level 10.

D&D General Alternatives to spell slots and spell points

Thank you for the suggestions, they've been very helpful! Here's the current draft (flavor from Hermetic magic):

recharge on a ritual - I like it! I could see how you could tie that into a hermetic magic system

D&D General Alternatives to spell slots and spell points

Yeah, this is similar to Black Hack 2. I'm thinking about using this mechanic

Does DCC just lists the spells and you mark them off when you cast them?

D&D General Alternatives to spell slots and spell points

These are helpful suggestions. I might let the magician cast each spell once, and then cast it subsequent times at a cost of damage to themselves.

D&D General Alternatives to spell slots and spell points

I have a little Weird World War II game I run at conventions. It is currently 5E, which works surprisingly well but is a bit heavy for the two-hour experience. I'm migrating this game over to something inspired by Black Hack, but I'm a bit stuck on the Magician (wizard equivalent)...

Oh, interesting. What program do you use to do simulations?

    Dragon Reflections #69

I have thought about it. Perhaps when I get to 100 issues I'll collect them up and publish them. I imagine interest would be pretty modest! Some of the early articles were a bit rough as I hadn't hit my stride. I've been (very slowly) rewriting them on my blog.

They published some fantastic material. I wondered what happened to the rights to their games?

    Dragon Reflections #69

I guess that was mostly urban-based RPG stuff? I can't imagine what they'd do in a dungeon!

    Dragon Reflections #69

Folks, I've been writing up summaries of The Strategic Review on my blog. I recently posted TSR #5. Some of you will find that interesting.

Dragon Publishing released Dragon #69 in January 1983. It is 103 pages long and has a cover price of $3.00. In this issue, we have runes, the thief-acrobat, and a complete board game! In a brief editorial, Kim Mohan defends Dragon's editorial independence, which has come under fire since...

How to Design a Wizard's Tower the Marvel(ous) Way

How to Design a Wizard's Tower the Marvel(ous) Way is a 25-page supplement by Eddie Reyes. It is published on the DMs Guild and has a cover price of $10.99. The author sent me a review copy. Reyes believes the wizard tower is an iconic D&D location that has been under-served by previous...
