    Tweaks I'm considering

The phrase "economy of actions" keeps dinging in the back of my mind as a warning against your proposal to give iterative attacks only to classes with full BAB. Either get rid of iterative attacks entirely (with exceptions for things like TWF or flurry of blows), or don't change it at all.

    Pathfinder 1E Freeport for Pathfinder?

Don't forget Dark Deeds in Freeport, a patronage adventure path being developed by Open Design. It's the raison d'etre of the Pathfinder Freeport Companion. Read more about it here.

    Which RPG Are You?

It thinks that I'm "Rifts." I am not "Rifts," to say the least. This quiz seems to have the same flaws as certain psychological profiles; the ones that ask if you like being around large groups of people, and conclude you are extroverted if you answer "yes." Too much obvious self-selection...

    Alchemist variant-Alchemical Spcialist

I was considering hacking a spell-less Alchemist. To replace spells, you're probably going to need a new ability every other level at least. I was going to group the less magical extracts by theme and treat them as spell-like abilities, maybe silo them like with cavalier orders, and throw in...

What's the best way to begin a space opera campaign?

I'm not sure space opera is going to get you different answers from other RPG genres to your general question, which is on how to bring random PCs into a coherent party. In Medias Res is a pretty good way to wrangle together a bunch of disparate characters. Prisons and shipwrecks are...

A reason why 4E is not as popular as it could have been

I wouldn't group setting materials in the same category as the adventure paths. APs (I believe) are where the money is for Paizo. The rules make Paizo money as well, but they also exist to perpetuate the adventure paths by making sure there are players. If the OP is right, the setting materials...

A reason why 4E is not as popular as it could have been

There I was referring to books like [i]City of Strangers[i], which Mercurius mentioned above. I'm only assuming it was a weak seller because Mercurius did. Good point. With the Advanced Player's Guide they've certainly moved beyond it that base, however. I don't recall that other OGL games...

A reason why 4E is not as popular as it could have been

As I understand it, Paizo is really in the business of selling Adventure Paths, and the Pathfinder RPG is just a way to make sure people are buying and playing APs. So to reframe what you said above: 1.) Paizo enriches the world with setting books, 2.) which only a few GMs buy, 3.) which they...

A reason why 4E is not as popular as it could have been

The apparent history of this thread has largely vindicated this position! Let's just say that I wish we could discuss the OP's point without edition wars, and that I don't blame the OP for trying.

A reason why 4E is not as popular as it could have been

If this thread denigrates into a river of flame, it's not the OP's fault. It's an interesting observation, and I don't see it as a criticism of 4E itself. I remember this line from when 4E Forgotten Realms was announced. It's seemingly not a bad idea, and I wonder why we haven't heard of a new...

I'm considering dropping Pathfinder to return to D&D 2e.

I've never really played anything older than 3e, so I can't give you too much advise, other than to do what you want. But I caution you that your players may not be as inspired by your edition switch if they have only played 3e or newer games. I knew a guy who tried to start a 2e game, and I can...

Ultimate Combat Playtest: Gunslinger, Ninja, Samurai

I only said "replace" because that's the word used in the intro of the playtest doc. I meant it in the sense that an alt class replaces a base class for a specific player. This is a really good point. I hadn't thought of alt classes as a way of expanding class ideas while avoiding rules bloat.

Ultimate Combat Playtest: Gunslinger, Ninja, Samurai

I haven't had a chance to read through them all yet, but apparently what you observe is intentional. Samurai replaces cavalier, ninja replaces rogue. Interestingly, gunslinger replaces fighter. I'm not sure if there is a good, rules-y reason they distinguished the "alternate class" concept...

Killjoy Cooking With the Dungeons & Dragons Crowd

And as KM pointed out, there a certain recursive irony to arguing around this particular article, given its topic. @KM: I just didn't think your examples of sports and politics were very apt for the point you were trying to make. But one could dismiss the distinction as, well, arcane minutiae.

Killjoy Cooking With the Dungeons & Dragons Crowd

PS You decry the sin of claiming that "the D&D crowd is somehow more obnoxious of an audience" than other groups, then go on to do the same for sports fans and political activists, talking about their propensity to riot. It's true that sports fans and political activists are probably more likely...

    Mouse Guard love....

It's based on Burning Wheel. Burning Wheel designer Lucas Crane is also the designer of Mouse Guard, and you can buy the game at the Burning Wheel store. Googling around, I found this excerpt from the Gnome Stew review of Mouse Guard.

Gaming Music - The 99 Darkest Pieces Of Classical Music

Seconded. "Black Angels" is a particularly chilling album. The title piece is avant-garde that anyone can love. I thought of Schoenberg's "Five Pieces for Orchestra" when I saw the thread title. For what it's worth, Arvo Part is very accessible and not at all avant-garde, if those words scare you.

    Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Freeport Companion

Anyone had a chance to look at this yet? I'm sort of interested in the classes: Are they essentially copy-pasted from the 3e Freeport Companion, or did the designers add some more powers, in the Pathfinder spirit of giving more choices within a class? Rules for gunpowder, ships, and sanity also...
