    Mearls: The core of D&D

I think all the points have been hit on this thread's sub-subject. Har! Har!

Overland Travel: a return to Hexploration?

Has anyone done an analysis of the origin of outdoor travel in D&D - the Outdoor Survival board game?

D&D - Mediaval Social, Political & Economical Structure.

Hammurabi's 'laws' are his edicts on "how things are to be." What is the procedure for changing them? There was none, except overthrow Hammurabi. They are still from the rule of man. Even where the polis (Athens) had a lawgiver in Solon, the entire circumstances and force of the resulting legal...

D&D - Mediaval Social, Political & Economical Structure.

If you're referring to the rule of laws rather than the rule of man, that goes back to Greece, and the polis . . . the origin of civilization.

WIR S1 Tomb of Horrors [SPOILERS!! SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!!]‏

I think these are explainable as being differences in the earlier, pre-published version of the dungeon. The original incarnation of ToH was for OD&D, and the tournament was in 1975, before AD&D 'existed.' Also, the Gygax refereeing the adventure in the report was a son of Gary, most likely Ernie.

WIR S1 Tomb of Horrors [SPOILERS!! SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!!]‏

A poster at Dragonsfoot found a report on Tomb of Horrors from the Origins I tournament in Alarums and Excursions, and retyped the text: Dragonsfoot • View topic - Tomb of Horrors Origins 1 Review from Alarums & Excursions 4 Interesting as a primary account of the original tournment! My...

Gambling in a fantasy world with divination magic

A true 'gambler' in a fantasy universe will make his own luck, not rely on divinations. In fact, he will find a way to make others' use of divinations work in his favor, if necessary. Think Cugel the Clever . . .

D&D - Mediaval Social, Political & Economical Structure.

I think one of the issues in understanding the society/economy of D&D is while it's often described overtly as 'medieval' it's really more 'Renaissance' in character. Secondly, despite that 'cultural' overlay on 'aesthetics' the real economy of the game, as it affects the players most directly...

Wherein nerds rage over what it means to be fantasy

I'm sure it's been cited before, but the original foreward to D&D specifically referenced Barsoom and the adventures of John Carter as part of the inspiration for the game. It doesn't really get more 'fantasy sci-fi' than A Princess of Mars, et al. Despite the 'Tolkien skin' applied to the game...

Forked thread: Treasure & Advancement Rates

A note about training: I'm pretty sure Gary said that for his campaigns, he permitted high level characters to gain levels without training, counting their adventuring time as 'on the job training' for name level and above characters, if I remember correctly.

Forked thread: Treasure & Advancement Rates

Speaking just for OAD&D, going by the XP charts and Gary's own testimony, the "end game" for characters was generally expected to be 14/15 or so. Not a hard cap (there was theoretically unlimited advancement for human characters), but that was generally the point when characters would retire...

Forked thread: Treasure & Advancement Rates

Pretty much this. Bullgrit-Quasqueton acts as if he is Galileo and those who dispute his findings are Catholics attempting to censor the 'objective scientific' facts of his research. His posts characterize the objections stemming from fear of 'losing our religion' about AD&D and the terror...

    A D&D Edition... into a SINGLE picture... (?)

Mod Edit: Images removed As noted elsewhere, EN World has a "no politics" rule. So, let's leave the real-world political references out of this thread, please. ~Umbran

What is the 15-minute adventuring day?

The 15-Minute Adventuring Day(TM) is also a symptom of party size being too small. The party expends more resources 'per head' than it really should. A partial remedy is judicious use of hirelings, henchmen, and followers.
