How to respectfuly disagree with EGG?

The discussion itself came up without my opinion starting it. I think it's fair game at that point. If I may be judge of my own case, my opinion hasn't been trollish in the least.

Dire rats not as mean as previously presumed

Those rats may taste like pumpkin pie, but I'm not gonna eat one.

How to respectfuly disagree with EGG?

Like any topic, there are constructive ways to discuss something on which people have differences of opinion/outlook. While I believe that starting from the assumption that WotC/Hasbro-D&D is a different game than TSR-D&D ought to lead to better, more constructive discussion, I'm aware of the...

    Why I'm done with 4e

This is why The Worm Ouroboros is required reading for D&D.

What is Vancian magic and does DnD have it?

As you note, both women had done harm or attempted to do harm to Cugel. Characters that "pull no tricks" on Cugel fare much better. Cugel is a great example of a character of Neutral alignment.

What is Vancian magic and does DnD have it?

AD&D magic was a synthesis of Vance's mnemonic magic (spell memorization) and the sympathetic magic (somatic and material components) from Camp and Pratt's "Harold Shea" stories ("The Roaring Trumpet," et al.). OD&D magic was wholly mnenomic, and closest to pure "Vancian." It wasn't used as a...

How to respectfuly disagree with EGG?

*raises hand* Since the 3e previews in Dragon during 1999 I've held that 3e isn't D&D (and by extension 3.5e); it is a new game. From what I know of 4e, I hold the same about it. I think this is actually a positive way to look at it; once you realize certain premises and assumptions have been...

How to respectfuly disagree with EGG?

What happens when those making strawberry call it chocolate? As in, "this is the way chocolate is supposed to taste, it's better than that older flavor."

2 Years of Eric Noah + 8 Years of Morrus = 10 years of EN World!

Did any threads at the original "Eric Noah's 3e Site" transfer over to EN World? If so, I'd love to revisit those discussions.

Will D&D ever be able to regain a base of "casual" players?

re: Magic the Gathering I briefly toyed with being a casual player, but the two players who introduced the game to me already each had a suitcase full of cards. I quickly realized that the cards arms race was too rich for my blood. I can count the number of Magic games I've played on one hand.

2 Years of Eric Noah + 8 Years of Morrus = 10 years of EN World!

I remember the Wild West of the old DND email list before Eric Noah opened his site. Gah! Ten years! Amazing.

Will D&D ever be able to regain a base of "casual" players?

I can testify that the participants of the long running AD&D game I ran were all casual players. I was the only "hardcore" player. Really, all you need is one "hardcore" player as DM per group. The rest falls into place. Mind you, the campaign took place during the 90s, so perhaps things have...

How is Old School not at least related to nostalgia?

I agree with C.S Lewis on this: Everyone gets his stabs of Joy in different ways; one never knows where it will come from. One thing is certain, the moment you turn your attention to the Joy itself in order to "capture" what exactly is causing it, it will elude you. Joy (and Fun) is a by-product...

I'll answer with a question of my own: How is New School not at least related to chronological snobbery?

    Identifying "old school" adventure modules

I don't have my copy handy to refresh my recollection, so I can't really do an enumeration, but I'll explain what I can from memory. list of magic "that doesn't work" - While "old school" play generally encourages and rewards creative use of magic, there is an undercurrent that "bans" certain...

    Identifying "old school" adventure modules

The core of Isle of the Ape is clearly "old school," (it being based on a portion of the original Greyhawk campaign in 1976), but its presentation for publication in 1985 has "new school" elements, such as the extensive boxed text (as well a plot with some scripted events).

Why is there a rush to define vintage gaming?

Jason, you're a mind reader - I was just about to comment on the "mythbusters" style that some discussions engender and how that is probably what can make someone put on his conspiracy hat.

Why is there a rush to define vintage gaming?

Pardon me, but I laughed out loud, literally. :p Careful though, there could be Godwin accusations forthcoming.
