    Savage Worlds vs DnD 5e

We find the initiative system a positive. It makes combat more unpredictable which we like. And having the cards visible makes it pretty easy to see who is going next which my group always seems to struggle with in D&D initiative unless we have some clear visual record. Savage Worlds doesn’t...

    Savage Worlds vs DnD 5e

The system is definitely comparable in overall ‘crunch’ to 5e, however I personally feel that it makes better use of that crunch. It’s a quite permissive system and you can bring in elements of narrative permission without moving too far from being a ‘traditional’ role-playing game. For...

    Savage Worlds vs DnD 5e

Hi @AK81 I have been playing D&D for over 40 years and played 5e since it was released. My wider RPG tastes moved to genre-flexible systems like GUPRS in the 90s and these days Savage Worlds is my favourite system by far. So hopefully I can help you get an impression of how Savage Worlds feels...

    What System For...?

It is definitely the case that assembly is required, but it is assembly rather than whole-cloth creation. And it doesn’t need to be super time consuming to add the labels that you want to the typical elements of a Cortex Prime implementation.

    What System For...?

It’s a very different game system in my opinion. I love flexible systems: GURPS, Savage Worlds, Fate. But Cortex Prime can handle different games to any of those with aplomb.

Simple, colorful mechanics to run a game for non-gamers?

I would use Fate or Fate Accelerated if I was doing someone like that. It is a simple system and leans in to narrative logic which a I find people new to gaming can tap into more naturally than game-thinking like 5-foot steps and so on. Make simple characters with a few traits, leverage the...

    What System For...?

That sounds like a premise that you could game with Cortex Prime, building a set of themed abilities or portfolios (like being the angel of butter fingers…) and using them to overcome varied challenges in different ways. Cortex Prime is a very flexible engine for made games with ‘weird’ high...

    Looking for something new

That’s right, and there has been a fair bit of additional materials produced for it since. Including several adventures and a periodical for the line.

    Looking for something new

I would say Savage Worlds ticks your boxes pretty well. The core book is pretty compact at about 200 ‘graphic novel’ pages. The system is super flexible in terms of genre support. The default feel is pulp but that could be sci-fi, fantasy, supers etc and you can easily tune that up or down with...

What is your favorite RPG book of all time?

Definitely, and you can do so much with it on just the core book. The earlier editions were good, but SWADE was the one that finally ticked all the boxes for me.

What is your favorite RPG book of all time?

Like many people I have spent years looking for ‘my game’, and I eventually found it in Savage Worlds Adventure Edition. With just over 200, graphic novel sized, pages it does so much in one book. Whenever I look over the book to remind me of something specific I see so many other tools and...

RPG Crowdfunding News – Savage Worlds, Curious Cats of Mau, The Shrike, and more

The Savage Worlds Sci-Fi Companion has already clocked up more backers than the Fantasy Companion did, which is very impressive considering fantasy is usually considered to be the most popular genre. Pinnacle have said the Sci-Fi companion will be about 300 pages now, too, though that hasn’t...

    Grading the Genesys System

I’ve played all three major variants of the system, and personally I enjoy WFRP 3e the most. Amongst other strengths, it helps with the dice interpretation issue greatly as every ability has its own custom set of advantages you can buy for that power, so you aren’t scrambling for constant...

    Grading the Burning Wheel System

I have both the Burning Wheel Revised and Gold editions, and have read them but not played them. It’s definitely a game I want to try at some point, and reads very different to most other systems I have read / played.

Should a TTRPG have a singular Core Rulebook or more?

For the core rules, I think one book is a good option. It means that is all a group needs to play the game. My definition of core rules includes rules for both creating and playing PCs and running all the other game elements as GM. It should include a generous helping of opponents, and...

    What System For...?

I think you could whip up a good Cortex Prime implementation for that. It has universal conflict resolution mechanisms, you can customise traits to reflect your mythic figures if you like, and gaining statuses of various kinds is a very common outcome for conflicts (which could be positive or...

How long should a gaming session be?

I have two overlapping groups. Both are f2f. One plays weekly on Thursday evenings, and we all work so those come in at about 3.5 hours, 4 max. There are four of us in this one including the GM. The other group plays monthly on a weekend and those tend to be ten hours sessions with a pizza...

RPG Crowdfunding News – Purple Planet, Veil of the Eternal Night, and more

Also finishing in this window is a new campaign for Loke Battlemaps: A bit different from previous sets, here they are mixing more base types of terrain with static-cling decals so you can have more exactly the layout you want.
