Rote vs. Restricted [Plus a sample Trailblazered spell sheet]

Well, let's clear up a few misconceptions, then. Magic missile is Rote. It's a single target spell with an instantaneous duration. As caster level increases, damage increases, with the option to split damage amongst multiple targets - this does not affect its Rote status. Input...

Rote vs. Restricted [Plus a sample Trailblazered spell sheet]

The R/R/R distinction is a guideline. By that guideline, most Instantaneous spells are Rote; unless the GM decides that the spell needs to be Restricted, or a Ritual, for balance / flavor reasons. Similarly, certain area effects (like Bless) are considered Rote for their iconic nature and...

    You roll a 3...

If you're worried about character effectiveness, simply have all starting PCs fight a house cat; while the character is naked and unarmed. If they lose then they get to use point buy. It worked spectacularly for two campaigns, and I only had one PC lose (something like three 8's, and nothing...

I need help statting up The Grieving Tree

Choose a CR. Find a demon / devil of the same CR. Use those stats but describe it as appropriate for a Grieving Tree. Minor mechanical changes will also be required (creature type; not core things like BAB or ability scores). For a scary end-boss type, I've occasionally used a Dragon, sans...

What if the PCs were literally invulnerable?

How were you able to encase him in concrete? Concrete takes hours or days to cure, so unless you've got magic concrete (and you might, anything is possible in a game) how did you restrain him? But, I'm not interested in making people game my way (unless I'm running the table - obviously not...

A couple of options I'm curious about with Trailblazer

Dude, they're for Farmers, Merchants, and other people who only need skill ranks making opposed rolls (or reminding the DM roughly how good they are at the few things they do). A PC should never, ever, end up with Ordinary levels - Player Characters are extraordinary by definition. A design...

What if the PCs were literally invulnerable?

You're right - some fights will be dramatically interesting because of the threat of capture, or being delayed long enough that the PCs can no longer accomplish their goals. But most fights won't be (which is my point) - most fights will simply be rolling dice until the PCs finish killing all...

A couple of options I'm curious about with Trailblazer

Oh, they aren't so bad. Just say the poor kid rolls a 1 on all his hit dice. 10 hp is impressive, but it's not enough to stand up to a 1st level warrior for very long. What is flawed is the skill DC assignments. Mozart was probably a level 4 character - Skill Focus for a +3; +4 ability...

What if the PCs were literally invulnerable?

If the PCs are invulnerable - or at least immortal - then Combat is not a challenge. It's flavor text. Like walking the dog or working in the garden, it's something the character will succeed at, eventually, because nothing can stop them from pulling it off. Very few interesting things will...

    You roll a 3...

Charisma is the traditional dump stat. Then play whatever you want, as the biggest jerk you can. Fistbeard Beardfist is always fun, as is super-wizard. Alternately, stick it in Int, and play Thog the half-orc barbarian - you won't get any stupider and you will be hell-on-wheels in a fight.

A couple of options I'm curious about with Trailblazer

How does Mozart have a BAB +8? Yeah, sure, he's a high level expert / commoner, so he can have his 10 ranks in Perform and Craft (Music) - but a 4 / 3 split means he's on BAB +4. Which is still ridiculous for a 6 year old, but it's no +8.

    Social Skills: Are they necessary.

Glad to help. Best of luck with the project.

    Social Skills: Are they necessary.

Are social skills necessary? No, but neither are any of the other rules. Are they necessary for a good tabletop RPG? Absolutely. The role of a character may include great social skill, something that some (very many) players lack. You don't require them to speak in precise, technical...

Is there a Trailblazer character sheet?

There is one. And if the stupid Search function would ever give me a result, I'd link right to it. Thank you Google: http://www.enworld.org/forum/bad-axe-games-hosted-forum/264925-feedback-trailblazer-character-sheet.html

A couple of options I'm curious about with Trailblazer

Well, it's had a "degree of failure" approach forever (see 3.0 Balance, Climb, Jump, . Which is easily translated into a corresponding "degree of success" (every 5 you beat the DC by). Then the DM just has to figure out what happens at increased degrees of success. (This is the mechanic that...

A couple of options I'm curious about with Trailblazer

Really? Huh, that's an unusual conclusion. In my experience, agreed to by the gamers I talk to about such things, 4e character creation is slowed down by Magic Items (a level 30 character takes about 30 minutes to knock out if you have a clue about what you want to do; picking his gear takes 7...

    Superhero RPG?

One suggestion that got skipped over was Savage Worlds with the Super Powers Companion or the Necessary Evil setting. Not the best way to get introduced to the Savage Worlds system, but it does work very well. My personal preference is Mutants and Masterminds 3E.

    Trailblazer mixology

I use Trailblazer as a core, and pull whatever I need from other sources. Essentially the same approach Wulf describes. Though I tend to just stick to SRD monsters and spells, but that's a matter of personal preference.

Brevity - a kind of review

Oh it does stuff. It frees up the other hand. Which lets them maintain a grapple and swing a great sword - that's not a small accomplishment. ;-) That said, my suggestion was rough. I'd put about 6 minutes of thought into converting over a different rule system's grappling rules, so I...
