D&D Still Satanic? "So my mom threw away all my D&D books..."

Well no, strictly speaking, they're not guests. Only because they weren't specifically invited to enjoy their parent's hospitality. So call it a dependent if you want, but what it breaks down to is that a child is using the resources of someone else to meet their basic needs. To me, that carries...

D&D Still Satanic? "So my mom threw away all my D&D books..."

To me, it isn't so much about what's in the best interests of the child. It's about being someone's guest, which a child functionally is until they get out on their own. If I'm living under someone's roof, eating their food and otherwise using their resources, I'm going to respect their wishes...

D&D Still Satanic? "So my mom threw away all my D&D books..."

I don't know if it's necessarily a "right" to lie, per se, but I'd certainly expect it. It's a perfectly reasonable response under the circumstances. I know that my own D&D games didn't miss a session because of what my father did. I never directly lied to him about it... He never brought it up...

DM/Graphic Designer with too much time on his hands...

Looks good! I've seen DMs do the paper tokens in this fashion before, and I'm sorry if it's stepping on toes if you've already thought of this... Get something on their bases to weight them down. A bit of scotch tape and a penny is good. I've seen those sorts of tokens go flying with people...

D&D Still Satanic? "So my mom threw away all my D&D books..."

Nope. My father had a baptist minister counsel me and do a prayer session over the eternal fate of my soul in the mid-nineties (and also threw out all of my 1E and 2E material). He went to his grave believing that his church wouldn't grant him a deacon position because I had played the game. A...

    Inherent PC Superiority?

This is an important distinction that often gets overlooked--in certain games, it's actually essential for the characters to be exceptional in order to be player characters. A superhero-themed game is just one example. In a campaign based on Greek mythology, where it's perfectly reasonable to...

Would this break a fantasy setting for you?

It'd severely impact my enjoyment of the game. I don't know if "suspension of disbelief" necessarily applies because we're talking about make-believe, after all, and it's not really worth discussing whether or not someone is using their own imagination "correctly." It'd definitely impact my...

    Inherent PC Superiority?

As both a player and as a GM/DM, I prefer for characters to be statistically average as compared to the people around them. There's a few major reasons for this... Reasons that not everyone will agree with or appreciate, but it's what I think. For starters, I personally enjoy a challenge. I...

Gamers looking for group in North Carolina

I'm on the eastern edge of Raleigh, right on the border with Knightdale. That's right at an hour from Rocky Mount. Might be a bit of a haul for you... But I'm starting up a Vampire: the Masquerade game soon and would certainly consider a D&D/Pathfinder game. If you can dig it, let's get in touch.

Players, have you fired your DM?

Yeah, I've been in some situations where an entire group has "fired" the DM. The last one was a 3.5 game very late in the 3.5 life cycle, early 2008. Basically, I made some time to play 3.5 and joined the first group that I found at the FLGS. I didn't know it at the time, but the DM had been...

    Triangle area, NC

I usually take my vacations in Asheville. Maybe we can do a one-shot some time. :)

Have you ever driven a player from a game?

I would say that I haven't "driven off" a player, on the basis that the way it's phrased seems like it would be done indirectly, in a passive-aggressive sort of way. That's not my style... While I generally don't let things get under my skin, I've got a pretty low tolerance for BS and I'm...

    Triangle area, NC

Looking for a group in the Triangle area that can play on Saturdays or possibly Sundays, beginning in April or so. My preference is for Pathfinder, but I'd also consider a 4E game or an older version of D&D. I might consider a classic World of Darkness game, depending on the interested parties...

Misfortune Cards: A DM Advantage Product

Y'know... Maybe I could allow fortune cards and then use them myself for the monsters as well as the PCs? That'd be fair, wouldn't it?

    Walking away from a game...

Unfortunately... I've seen people treat female gamers like this before. Shelly Mazzanoble even addressed a question from someone about female gamers in her column this month. That sort of thing sometimes leads me to think that tabletop RPGs are perhaps the vast final frontier of idiocy in terms...

Misfortune Cards: A DM Advantage Product

It's a step in the right direction. One of my biggest beefs with fortune cards is my opinion that "fortune" shouldn't always favor the characters. I'd use 'em.

    Walking away from a game...

Wow... Where do I start? I've walked out on several games, many during a session in progress. I suspect that I'm somewhat unique in this situation, most people don't seem to burn through groups like I do. The vast majority of the time, I leave a group because the DM/GM has control issues...

Killjoy Cooking With the Dungeons & Dragons Crowd

Y'know, I remember reading this article when it first came out and getting a chuckle here and there. But it's a bit biased--after all, we haven't heard from the fans that actually like The Better Joy Cookbook. My mind wandered to this piece during a boring meeting today, so let me share a few of...

Why did you stop subscribing to DDI?

To be upfront... I've never had a Dungeons & Dragons Insider subscription. But I'd like to get one, if it ever gets to the point where it has some value to me. I felt like I should chime in because I'm a potential customer that isn't (apparently) being targeted, and also, because the people I'm...

The Real Housewives/husbands of your RPG Group

There was actually someone on BBN a few weeks ago that did a radio show aimed at teaching kids and their parents the horrible dangers of fantasy role-playing games. I was amazed that someone in 2011 still wants to perpetuate the idea that you have to cut your hand and bleed into a magic circle...
