Ahh, but now we have a wonderful feat called Practiced Spellcaster, courtesy of Complete Divine. The mystic theurge in my game is a clr 3/wiz 3/MT 2, and casts his 5th-level repetiore of wizard spells as an 8th-level wizard. That's not inconsiderable.

That's the great thing about books. Once they're printed, they're good for years. If you don't like what's done with 3E you could always play an older edition or some hodge-podge of whatever works for you. I'm a big 3E fan, but I still use my 2E historical reference sourcebooks and 2E Legends...
